Running Lean

I know this could probably be one of several things but just thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas (I've done a search but no joy).

Engine management light came on the other week, the car drove fine, no power loss or anything. The only difference is when its warm it can't seem to decide on idle revs, usually when warm it idles at around 750 or less but now it sits at about 1000rpm, sometimes 1200 for a few seconds but it never drops below 900 and it also hunts around, with the revs constantly rising and droping slightly.

I took it my local garage who I use a lot and he checked it with a snap on diagnostic which came up with a runing lean error. My mechanic thought it was probably the lambda sensors after looking at a telemetry graph so I booked it in .

After having the car all day he couldn't get to the root of the problem, he said it definately wasn't the Lamda's and that he had driven the car round a fair bit with the diagnostic plugged in on a real time and the fault only showed up when the car was idle.

He reset the warning light and charged me nothing as I use him a lot, which was great, but the light is back on again now.

He's suggested going for a smoke test to look for a leak but he doesn't have the equipment so I'd have to go elsewhere and don't want to risk getting ripped off and it might not be that anyway but I'd still get charged for the check.

Had the car for 4 years now and its on 110k so thinking of geting rid of it, infact going looking at a BMW 130i on the weekend, but would still like to get it fixed so I could sell it privately or keep it for a bit longer.

Sorry for the essay, anyone had a similar problem?

might be worth checking and cleaning the throttle body, do a search and you'll find the guide

It's quick and cheap so nothing lost by doing it

By the sounds of it i had the exact same problem.Take off the plastic engine cover and inspet the y shaped pipe that on the right hand side for any holes, also check the pipes under the inlet manifold for holes. The y shape pipe was around £35 but be very careful when removing it as the plastic pipe below it is very easily broken, didn't need to replace the pipes under the inlet manifold as i managed to repair them with heatshrink.
