so how much is the turbo going to be form loba?? as i keep thinking of getting a bigger turbo

I've just asked for a price - will confirm when I know more.

Whooa, that inlet looks huge, Rob

:) Just need to re-iterate my concerns about the potential for surging when I open this up with a free flowing TIP and ported JBS exhaust manifold., though with a large port cylinder head and an optimised hotside this ought to be appeased...

inserting an inlet into the comp housing is possible even from CR, it was discussed, but al mods like this add to the cost of the turbo. Its the least compromised option on inlet as even the k04 housings will have either a small initial reduction, OR, be machined to within an fraction of a mm from breaking thru to the bore.. (as someone with a k04 hybrid reported)

Price of a loba?

2283 comp with RS6 clipped turbine is what was originally discussed.. Back to square one.

throw a dice, make a choice.... someones got to be guinee pig..

my own hybrid I have paused whilst the V2 k04 reveals its results, which currently look dissapointing.
(and its not on a 2280 wheel!)

Small update - my diff has now been received by SQS who are starting to put my new gearbox together, ready to ship over to me :)

I've also spent some time talking to LOBA Motorsport in Germany over the phone who kindly spared some time to discuss my plans for pushing more power from my Turbo Dynamics hybrid and what they may be able to offer while I continue to monitor Rob Smith's progress with his V2 K04 from CRT.

LOBA have been involved with a lot of development on various hybrid turbos, including the MTM/Dahlback K04 for the RS4 etc

Check out http://www.loba-motorsport.com/ for more info

Following up over email they advise I may be better off selling my existing turbo and starting from fresh as they can't account for the exact modifications and spec that Turbo Dynamics have installed.

They are able to provide an off-the-shelf K03 hybrid, the LO300 which uses the 2283 compressor wheel (which amazingly appears to fit inside a K03 compressor housing) with a clipped RS4 turbine wheel and accompanying modifications. Pics:

"How about that side boob? That turn you on?"

As the name suggests, this model is apparently good for around 300 ponies - though LOBA can offer varying degrees of spec using the 2277, 2280, 2283 and their own custom 2479 compressor wheel.

Knowing that the 2283 wheel is capable of flowing over 330 BHP with the correct accompanying mods I'd like to aim higher than 30x BHP, but the hotside will remain the limiting factor here, not forgetting the issues we've seen with surging on some other similar units from other companies which are actively being investigated further. It's all a fine balance.

I was told that my turbine wheel is a full trim RS6 wheel, though it's believed that this can't physically fit inside a K03 housing

Here's a pic I got the other night, where you can see it's not cut-back at least:

I'll try and get some better ones tonight when more things are stripped off the engine.

thanks for the pictures robbie
interesting wastegate actuator.. looks tunable. what psi would they suggest on your setup and what do they say about surge on one of these babies.

It looks very much like Prebs one aside from the insert inlet.

No worries. Don't think that I'm stepping on anyone's toes here Bill - I'm simply exploring all available avenues here so I can make the best informed decision before parting with my money.

Darius @ LOBA seems to have a lot of experience with tuning Borg Warner units in particular so I value their input on this and their products look very high quality. I'm currently waiting on a price while we continue to discuss potential specs - I'll confirm when I know more.

I just need to make sure they're aware of the potential surge issues when opened up to their full potential which we've only recently come to realise thanks to the likes of the 3" TIP and high flow manifolds now available.

Interesting that they referred to the blueprints of a K03 over the phone and commented that they didn't see how a full size RS6 wheel would physically fit inside the housing. With their LO300 they propose to use a clipped RS4 turbine wheel.

I'm not sure on recommended boost yet as I only kicked off proper discussions this afternoon but watch this space.

i did'nt think anything of the sort.. the info is good. just as i read it it looks like their hybrid is the same turbine and comp as the cr k04 (and others) but machined insert on comp housing so its full size intake (which is nice)

clipped turbine, 2283 is what I am personally thinking (like preb's) for lupo testing

One other thing that does interest me with the development of the 3" TIP...

As the standard K04s have seen impressive gains with just the TIP alone I am curious as to how much flow my RS4 2078 wheel has got left in it if I had a one-off adaptor made to fit my 44mm K03 intake, mated to the 3" TIP.

I'd like to find out what this comp wheel's flow rating is, though appreciate the K06 ETT wheels are hugely more efficient.

Robbie, seeing the pics of the LOBA k03 hybrid makes me think that this is still a smaller housing then my hybrid witch has the k04 housing. Im currently waiting for respond from CR but it looks like mine also has the 2283 wheel fitted.

The k04 housing is a great deal larger then the k03 as I needed to grind a bit off the head to make it fit:)

Remember the "surge" issue has only occured on 1 hybrid as far as I know witch had k04 fitment and with ours beeing k03 I would guess it will behave diffrently.

Im almost done with my install of the hybrid with the 3" TIP and it has NOT bin a walk in the park but I hope the hotside will be capable of pushing the 300 mark with instant boost on the top rev range and not dropping even like the k03 hybrids.

Interesting point on the surge front, I can't help but think what first comes to mind regarding anti-surge compressor housings, something like this:

I know it's not exactly a bolt on application for the turbo you're looking at but could there not be some kind of development regarding this type of housing on a KKK type turbo? Possibly you could get on to LOBA, see if they have some kind of equivalent option. Other than that the plans look good, be interesting to see what kind of price they want for this...

Bill - does Welly's hybrid use a cut-back turbine wheel? I forget after reading so many different specs...

From the pics I've seen in the hybrid discussion thread the LOBA turbine housings seem to have higher clearances than the CR variants around the wheel itself which may be one of many overall contributing factors.

Yes Prebs - as we've discussed above the LO300 uses a K03 compressor housing but flows optimally thanks to the custom insert so it shouldn't be at any disadvantage.

I personally believe your turbo has the 2283 billet wheel fitted. Is your turbine wheel clipped?

Mark replied and confirmed that 2283 wheel is fitted, my turbine wheel isn´t clipped.

Have you decided what to go for? Almost febuary now:)

I'll look out the part number tomorrow when back at my unit.
You need the lower portion of the LCR pump and swap the tops over along with fuel sender unit for the ibiza.. fiddly but carefully done its ok.
