Simple enough, mk3 ibiza cupra, how many revs does it do in top gear (5th?) at 70? I want lower revs!! Well... when I get one....

Mine does about 2700rpm at indicated 70mph

GPS 70mph is more like 2850rpm iirc

Hope this helps

Helps immensly mate. Mine does 3700 when using the gps. really annoying when you want a 'cruise' with the music not-so-loud :(

Does anyone else think that the ibiza's badly need a 6th gear for cruising on the motorway? Would help save on petrol aswell keeping the revs down

There's talk of it all the time iirc, but it's a case of finding the right casing and the like. If it could be done relatively cheaply, I would think half the ibiza's on here would have them. there's obviously a reason.

Thanks for the replies, guys. was starting to worry about doing 3.7k in a 1.8T... Expensive much?

not even sure if it IS possible but when i had the incredlbly long diffed TDI box in my 16v i was going to swap the outer 2 gears to standard for a more realistic 5th gear as it would be stalling under 75 in 5th :)

in principle and some research i can have a look at the tdi 5th gear ratios and see if that would yield a cut in revs, most of the difference tdi is in the diff so a minor change might just be enough ?

no promises but i'll have a nose and see what ratios are listed

cool flapper, have an xls on all the ratios actually.

I would only replace 5th as I LOVE 3rd and 4th in the cupra.

also i heard corrado gears may fit'?

can't remember which does what so ill name em front and rear for reference but ill try and list all the ratios+numbers i can find

petrol EDT/EWP
36/43 = 0.837
Rear 02A311361L
Front 02A311158H

diesel 110 EKW/EWZ
29/39 = 0.743
Rear 02A311361AD
Front 02A311158AE

diesel 90 EKU/EXA
33/46 = 0.717
Rear 02A311361M
Front 02A311158R

all i can confirm is the 5th gear syncro hub and collar assy is the same for all 6 trans so i can't see a reason why not on paper but as usual tools wise is a different story but at least the ratios may help a paper exercise to see if it's even worth considering ??

wierdly the petrol diff ratio isnt listed due to changed parts (confirmed replacement part numbers to be 61/18=3.38) the tdi has a choice shown with no confirmation of two choices which is different ill admit

60/19 = 3.15
61/18 = 3.38

but anyway i know the diff ratios won't be relevant for this project as such just adding it to see what difference the newer ones had compared to the mk2 i looked up before

as said above this is merely an idea off the top of my head and i have no 'real' idea as to wether these gears will fit straight on and do the job intended as i haven't yet had the pleasure or done the maths and don't have all the right pieces to hand sadly

quick bang in the wild stab with some guessed numbers in my ratio spreadsheet so these are not accurate to the car in any way but will give you an idea of what difference just the gears would make if numbers were compared

using base figures = 205 tyre / 50 profile / 16" rim / 3.38 diff / 3000rpm

0.837 = 75.96
0.743 = 85.57
0.717 = 88.68

i'm off to bed now my head hurts

When i travel back to Uni after a weekend i usually wait until around 11pm then get on the motorway and sit behind a truck doing 56mph, my cupra trip cpu reckons im getting 55mpg average on an hours trip of that its great. It takes alot of dicipline to do it though.

2700 rpm = 70mph in my car aswell

Okay, resurrecting an old thread here, but I'm fed up of doing 3.5k revs again. if I can find a cupra gearbox, could I fit it in my 1.4. If I can, is it a direct fit, or would it be swap the cogs over... any ideas? Want mpg but not diesel :p Can anyone help?
