Replacing steering wheel

Quick question -- will the 3 spoke steering wheel from a mark 3 Golf be a direct swap for that on the Leon, and will the airbag fit to the Golf wheel without any problems?

The steering wheel on the Leon is quite badly worn, and I have the chance of a mark 3 Golf unit in Leather.

Thanks

I replaced the steering wheel on mine a few months back, purely because the standard wheel that was on was looking tatty. I would have replaced like for like, but found a leather stitched cupra wheel on the bay for £45. It is a direct like for like swap.

Following on from the other thread about modifiying, the only reason I went for a leather replacement from a Cupra was the cost, and the lack of availability of standard steering wheels in good condition! Had the listing on ebay been for a cupra leather wheel with red stitching, I wouldn't have touched it!

Yes, the leather wheel I got was supposedly out of a 54 plate Cupra, and has black stitching. The important thing for me was that it was cheaper to get this one than a standard one that was advertised at the same time, and that being all black it didn't alter the original look of the car.

That's a really good deal you got, especially including postage.

Edit, apart from taking the usual precautions about the airbag, there's one thing I would do when you install it. You'll have no idea whether the airbag had deployed on that new wheel, so I would swap over the airbag carrier from your original so that you know everything will fit back perfectly. The airbag carrier simply bolts on with 4 torx headed bolts, and will take you no more than a couple of minutes to swap over.

My new wheel didnt come with an airbag so i reused the existing one, and its already been installed, was very easy really

Yeah, I wasn't meaning alter the airbag as such. Given that there wasn't an airbag on the new wheel, same as when I got mine, you don't know if an airbag had deployed whilst it had been fitted on that wheel in the car from where it came. That's why I suggested changing the carrier, knowing that the carrier on your existing wheel hadn't been subjected to the forces of an airbag deployment which may have bent it out of shape, even ever so slightly.
As I've said in other threads, part of my previous employment was road safety demonstrations, including setting up airbag demos, and we found that on many occasions (granted we usually used Ford or Vauxhall steering wheels and airbags) once that airbag had deployed, it was impossible to safely install a new airbag onto the carrier fitted to that wheel.
