Has anyone had their dsg mechatronic unit replaced? If so, which dealership did you use? How helpful where they?

Im pretty sure my unit is broken, and it is driving me insane, enough to the point where I feel like getting rid of the car. 2010 2.0 TSI Petrol FR, 22k Miles

- Clunky down shifts
- False neutrals
- Lots of vibration when coming to a stop/ reversing
- Hesitation from a stop
- Does not pull away smoothly

All I am getting atm is the dealer saying its a "DSG characteristic " .... Which is a load of **** because I have drove another DSG car before which was silky smooth. I don't want to persue the issue with that joke of a place if they can not be bothered to diagnose my problem (I'll not name the dealership for arguing sake) , I would much rather go to one where they have experience of the problem/ know what they are doing. Has anyone else been successful?

Any advice would be great. :)

Cheers

....I hate these posts about DSG issues. They never have a happy ending :( 1.5 to 2k repair costs, and make me nervous about mine at 75k miles.

Hope you get it sorted mate

I had a distinct issue with mine a few years back. When moving off or crawling in a queue of traffic it was very jumpy. You had to accelerate off like you stole it, or it would jump and surge. Took it to a dealer who said it was fine! They did an adaption, which basically resets everything it has learnt about you but to no effect.

So, what I did was drive the car until I had the problem present itself again and then drove straight to the dealer and took out the technician who then confirmed it was not the correct behaviour. He drove and experienced it for himself.

The car was then booked in and they had it for 3 days before they could reproduce it. A mechatronics unit was ordered and replaced. They also changed the oil as part of it. This was the first one that dealer had ever done! I've not had any issues since, and I've had my car since new in March 08, issue was in 09 I think, the topic is on here somewhere.

I can still catch it out if I do something out of my normal driving routine, and sort of reproduce the behaviour, but it has to be very deliberate. Anyway, only way to get it resolved is to take someone out in the car with you when it's presenting the issues and get them on your side. You don't have to use the dealer you bought it from - any will look at it - in my case it was Huddersfield Seat.

Was that under warranty? I'm guessing it was if it happened in 09 on an 08.

This morning, coincidentally, I was in heavy traffic and it was pretty juddery. The revs needle blips between 1000 and 1050-1100 revs. Just enough to make a subtle rocking motion.
Annoying!
Goes away of you put it in manual in 1st

I had it when I bought my car. Didn't pick it up on the test drive because the problems didn't start until it was fully warm. Should have taken it on a longer test drive! Mechatronics unit was replaced under warranty luckily for me.

The main issue I had was starting off in first. It was like I was learning to drive with the kangaroo hopping. It was embarrassing having to start off from traffic lights in a city with people around! It still kangaroo'd even in 'manual'. The other thing it used to do was not change down early enough in 'D'. Approaching roundabouts and it was still in 4th/5th. I even managed to stall it on a hill once.

There seems to be quite a large number of these problems with the gearbox, although I suppose they have made a load of them. I wonder what percentage get similar problems.

If its 2010 i guess its under warranty? In which case take it to another dealer. They get paid off seat for warranty work so they should be looking to do it!

Yeh - it was horrible. Basically if sat in a queue and you want to inch forward slowly, or creep, you took your foot off the brake in D and it just surged and hopped forwards. Since the replacement it's lovely and smooth. You see when I had the car that first year at all lights I used to take it out of D and put it in P and foot off brake. Now I just leave it in D with foot on the brake. Can't be a coincidence that I've not had a problem since...

Putting the box into P at lights is definitely not recommended practice. For longer stops putting it into N with handbrake on is best, or for normal stops like you do now leave in D + brake.

Touch wood we've never had issues with any of the 3 DSG cars we've owned so far but I'm glad there's 16 months Seat warranty left on the '60 plate FR we recently bought just in case...

Indeed - I read the manual after having issues and discovered that it recommends to leave in D. N is also discouraged it seems so I never use it at all as, and I may be wrong, but in 'N' the clutches aren't disengaged fully?

I'm 4.5 years in to mine and it's still fantastic (that hiccup aside) :)

Thanks guys for the insight,

I know dealerships get paid for the work but it doesnt necessarily mean they want to do it. I dont want to go to another dealer and get fobbed off again, I was looking at who had been successful in a claim so that particular dealership knew about the issues.

I will probably give Seat UK a ring to see what they say.

Anyway I am glad my car still has 15 months warranty to potentially cover the extortionate costs!

I think in N the clutches must be disengaged as the car does not try to move forward and can be rolled manually in either direction (had to do this to move car out of garage with a flat battery..!)

Likewise, had to stick with DSG when we changed cars recently and don't think we would go manual again.

I agree, I dont think I would go manual again if my next car manufacturer had the option of a dsg type box ( I wouldn't go normal automatic) ... I think BMW and Alfa have one along with Jaguar...
It is such a nice drive when its working properly and that is what is annoying me even more!

Yes, if they are willing to.
I just wanted a good dealership on my case because I cba going through a load of **** again and get no where with a different place. I am going to ring Liverpool Seat and see if they will look at it seeing as they have a decent reputation it seems :)

I've had mixed experiences with Liverpool Seat, mainly services but some warranty work on our old FR.

Have a try and see what they can do...will be interested to know if they can sort it for you.

I had it replaced on my previous Stylance. I bought it at 18 months old from Hobins in Manchester, and almost immediately had the same problems as you. They didn't accept there was a problem (to be fair to them, the problem seemed to be less when their mechanic was driving), and I got the 'characteristic' speil too.

I took it to another dealer (Lookers in Stockport) who diagnosed it and replaced the mechatronic unit. It took several visits and uploading of software before it was done however.

Thankyou very much, just what I needed!

I will see what Liverpool have to say about it, otherwise I will try my luck with them, thanks :)
