Code is NOT required.

The radio automatically identifies "its" vehicle.
If the electricity supply is interrupted, when the ignition is switched on again the radio will check whether it can still identify "its" vehicle.
Once the vehicle has been identified, the radio is again ready for use.

you wont need a radio code but you will need to re-calibrate the steering angle sensor - once the battery is re-fitted take the car on a short drive and the lights on the dash that appear will go off. also the alarm may go off when your removing it, to avoid this noisey problem just leave the ignition on when doin so.

just on the point has anybody ever tried that gadget (cant remember the name) that plugs into your cigarette lighter with a battery attached which keeps current flowing therefore dont need radio codes or need to reset anything? just wonder if they work?

Depends if its one with a battery built in or its a battery pack with a connector, the best are the battery packs with a connecter because you plug it in to the cig lighter so the power is never totally lost - thus saving the power/radio etc

The only time you will need to reset the radio code is when changing the instrument cluster or doing stuff to the immobiliser.
