Basically following on from my previouse thread of making a diy short shifter for the mk4 ibiza (I cant finde my previouse thread though but it was similare to this thrad).

I'm trying to remove the gear shift bracket off the top of the gearbox but it wonte come off for love nor money. It has a 13mm nut holding the bracket over the splined shaft but once the nut is off the bracket refuses to come off and I dont want to force it to much.
So has anyone ever removed the gear shift bracket before or has anyone got any tips for me please.

Also how does the shifter cable come off the bracket as its different to the Leon one, it has a ball on the end off the pin and a socket on the end of the shifter cable and again I dont want do force it incase I damage it.

Anyone got any Ideas?

Whack some WD40 onto it and give it a few minutes to do its thing. Then put the nut back on a few turns and tap it (not too hard or you'll muller the threads) with a hammer while you pull the bracket with your other hand. It'll come free eventually.

the braket ontop of the gear box is held on by 3 13mm bolts if you cant get that of them PLEASE dont make a custom short shifter!!!!!!!

I got it off after a lot of swaring. Rash, once I took the 13mm nut off the bracket refused to come off and I didnt want to force it incase there was something els I had missed. I managed to get it off with a small pry bar on one side to put some pressure on it and give it a little wiggle with the other hand and it poped off, and now comes off much easyer now.

whats the plan then how are you going to get a shorter stroke but with all the same things happenting ontop of the gearbox? or are you going to try fitting a diffrent model gear selector on your car and then converting that?

ever thought about just choping the gear stick down driving my golf before was like driving a bus but chopped the gear stick down now it looks gangster and its such a short gear change :) all round

Well the plan was to move the pin that the gear cable connects to Rash, just like in the above thread, but once I got it off I'm not so sure there is enough meat on the shifter to reposition it safely enough. There is plenty of room on the side to side bracket to do it safely though.

we talking cut off and re weld further into the centre of the braket? thats the backwards and forwards mechanism above with the weighted funny head on it isnt it? just re-enforce it make it wider

No, not cutting and rewelding as I dont have the scills to weld ali only steel. Was thinking more along the lines of removing the pin repositioning it where the red circle is. But like I said, not to sure there is enough meat. Might have a look to see if I can re-enforce ir somehow.

pay someone to weld it for you, would only cost pennies and save you fannying about with a pin which is more than likely 1 use!

The pin looks like its an interferance fit so as long as I make the hole for it ever so slightly smaller it will fit no probs. If not I can easy drill and tap the bottom of the pin and stick a bolt in to hold it.

Have you had a look at the link in the first post mate. The guys that did it for the leon say it works fine.
