hi guys, currently got a completely standard 1.9tdi 110bhp leon, looking to start modifying the engine, does anybody have any advice for re-mapping....
i.e.
-is it as good as they say?
-what is a reasonable price-ive seen everything from 80-350 pounds for seamingly the same thing?? and any recommended companies for it??
-is it going to strain any other part of the engine or can i get away with just re-mapping for now?

would greatly appreciate any help,
bradley

A remap on any modern TDi engine will give great improvement. Your prices I would suggest are £80 for a tuning box, up to £350 for what I would expect to be a pretty good remap.

Tuning boxes at £80 are OK, but are a bit "snatchy" on acceleration, and ultimately will cause ECU faults. If you want to go down the tuning box route, buy a more expensive one, as they are better, and are adjustable(TUNIT and Dragon spring to mind). Best bet is to really have a remap. (Yeah, OK, I have a TUNIT-I box, but its a £300 box, and I got it for less than £200, with a warranty)

Good companies? Most of the Site Sponsors who offer remaps are good, guess its down to where in the country you come from.

It may make your clutch slip eventually, as the extra torque will not do it any favours. (I've had to have a new clutch).

A decent remap should see your car reach 140bhp, and 295Nm(210ft/lb) of torque (110bhp/235Nm(173ft/lb) as standard). This all adds up to better acceleration, and will pull better through the mid range of revs.

Driven normally, (steady accelleration and early gear changes) you should also see better fuel economy

a guy my way offers remapping at £120 , but convinced he just turns the boost and fueling up ,

one of the boys has an ibiza 110 he done his abd his ecu couldnt be done , had to replace the chips in the ECU , goes well for what it is , and is not far off mine upto say 80 / 100 , then mine takes advanstage of the bigger turbo and 6 speed box :)

Do your research mate, i spoke to a revo guy at Audi Driver International recently who said not to bother mapping TDi's - might work well at first, then a cloud of black smoke will constantly be there from speaking to others about it!

depends on who maps it and how much they get out of it , if your maxing the ability then yes expect smoke if it just a moderate increase i dont think so ,

being diesel anyway you have a little smoke ?? so makes no difference

My TDi 90 has been running at 135bhp for 2½ years now, and doesn't smoke much at all.

OK, if i floor it at low revs, I get a puff of smoke, but an ummapped diesel will do that.

I have had this flat out (speedo reading 121mph, but was probably a little less, remember its a diesel, and not a PD150), and it wasn't smoking much at all.

This Revo guy at Audi Driver Int must have had a rare bad experience, as everyone I know with mapped/chipped/tuned diesels are fairly happy with the long term results

Have you got bigger injectors in there too mate?

Fair point, i think the guy was just saying in general... the bog standard platform for tuning would be a 1.8T, i think they prefer to stay away from TDi's! but its down to the drivers, i had a A3 1.9TDi PD engine, 130 brake and boy did that shift, TDi's are all about the torque!!

But then i came back to reality and became a pertol head again! 1.8 20VT! : )

it really depends on how much you want to spend, but you might find you get the tuning 'bug' :D
My 110 has about 190bhp+ at the moment and it pulls like a train all the way to the red line. A remap will give you the best hp increase in a single go. Tuning boxes are ok but they can be a bit smokey.

Yep its a hoot, 1st and second gear are useless in the wet. It really need a taller 5th gear, who needs to change down to overtake quickly:whistle:

Ah stage 3, never really looked into what thats all about!

I recon the cost so far is about £2.5k. I daren't do the sums properly as would have shock :cartman:

I' will be fitting a set of ARP head studs soon as I think the head may have lifted and pressurized the coolant tank at some point. This will be a 'quick fix' as next year I'm gona install Rosten H-beam con-rods, as I dont want to grenade the bottom end when giving it some s*** on a track day :D
