Hi All

Ive got some 2nd hand alloys for our old Golf but they looks like they could do with a refurb as theres some bad corrosion on a couple of them.

So does anyone know the steps to refurb them?

Is it just a case of rubbing them back and repainting?

Any guides?

Cheers

Depends on how far you want to go.

I had a set of Pirelli P-slots spare with my Mk1 Golf, I used them as track wheels but wanted them looking tidy.

I stripped the original paint off with nitromoors (took forever to do it properly, but you get a proper result).

A couple of kerbing marks on the rim were smoothed out with a dremel and a grinding wheel (very carefully!).

Gave the whole surface a light sanding, then washed down and wiped with spirit to remove any grease from fingers, etc.

Then sprayed several coats of primer, followed by several coats of silver wheel paint, followed by several coats of clearcoat (laquer). Took a couple of weeks in all to do all four wheels, doing a bit at a time - although it wasn't every day - and leaving plenty of time for each layer of paint to dry.

It was certainly nothing like having them properly refurbished, but looked smart enough and did the job.

Telford ay it...
Im currently doing my teledials. Got the paint off one so far.

To be honest i wouldnt bother taking the old paint off if there not in too bad condition. Just key them up and spray. Its the way i did my 20vt wheels. Would have been a decent finnish if i hadnt have rushed them

interesting.... generally most of them are in ok condition, its just a couple of wheels have some big corrosion bits from the egde about the size of an old 50p coin,

so im thinking maybe not strip the whole wheel?

just do what jenk says...... hmmmmm

Wet N Dry 1200 sand paper, and smooth back to get rid of the damage.
And keep rubbing around the edges...

Make sure you put masking tape over the tyre of where your painting/spraying.
