Hi,

I am about to put my private plates on the car. Took off the existing places to have a look and it is a screw, so do you think then that the dealer just drills the holes on the plates then drills a pilot hole into the black rear section for the self tapper to bite?

I can’t reuse the old holes or at least one of them as dealer had put the plate on slightly off centre by about 10mm which is dong my OCD nut in

So hopefully it is just a simple job of plate in correct position then pilot holes. Anybody else had to either move their rear plate or fitted different ones?

TBH, I think the dealers just hold the plate on with one hand and drill with the other from some of the plates I've seen. I usually flip the plate over and drill back to front (with masking tape over the back parts I'm drilling through). Usually the plastic bumper / diffuser is soft enough to just screw straight into. But yeah, small pilot holes would help keep it all lined up.

Yeah I reckon that that’s what they have done as it was slightly down on one side as well. It’s good that on the rear black section there are four circles with cross hairs through them.
These must be used to line the plates up at least if they did it that way the plate would be level.

my MY14 Cupra plate was wonky, I took old one off and fitted a new short 6 digit plate. I used a Halfords kit (decent doubel sided tape).

Imo don't drill it, use the double sided foam, much tidier finish. Sticking bolts through the plate to mount it ruins it for me.

Halfords does the stuff, I personally used the 6mm foam to make the plate stick out abit instead of being flush. But it's personal preference, you just have to make sure you're a good judge of 'level' so you don't stick it on wonky lol.

Best plate you can get (hope you plan on sticking on and not screwing on :p).

Check and see if where you're getting the plate do the whole 3D and 4D options. I know round here they do those two options, 3D is the gel but very square looking. 4D is the same gel characters only the edges are beveled and look so clean. Just a thought.

Have you fitted the 3D gel

I am a wee bit confused now on whether it’s 4 or 3D

I don't know if everywhere do it, but that's what the boys round here have. See photos below, one showing the '4D' and the other '3D'.

You can see the '4D' one is so much smoother and nicer looking. The '3D' one isn't as catching.
