Rear light cluster leaking

Anyone know if Seat supply a gasket kit for the rear clusters, one side (O/S) is leaking as the gasket was not "lying" correctly at initial assembly, I removed the gasket and applied a continuous bead of sealant in the channel where the gasket is located, but it looks like the gasket has once again managed to take up its original position - so is probably permanently deformed. I know VW did supply gasket sets for the 9N Polo.

I don't know the answer to this mate but out of interest are you getting water in the boot because of this. My six week old Ibiza has a decent amount of water in the spare wheel well and I can't see where it's coming in but suspect it's behind the nearside light.

I'll need to get it booked in.

Hi, no, no water getting into boot, just water crossing the gasket and misting up the lens.

Have you taken your rear light cluster out to see where the problem is?

If I was to take a guess, I'd reckon that it will not be where the rear light clusters are, I seem to remember that there is only a small hole where the wiring passes through the body.

Though I've forgotten exactly how the hole for the wiring gets sealed!

Only two holes.

1. grommet sealed hole with the wiring loom through it.
2. hole for the screw to pass through where the plastic nut screws on to.

As long as the grommet is in place around the wiring - and the small seal is sat around the base of the screw - I don't think the water is getting in behind the light.

There are three rubber plugs at the top of the tailgate - if they are missing - water could get in to the tailgate and run around to the bottom wher it might drip in to the boot.

That has refreshed my memory on how things are wrt the rear cluster - thanks! (now to work out if that car has a failing battery - sorry, I'll stop cross posting right now!)

Deano, any comments/facts to make on "is there a gasket set for these rear clusters - available as a repair kit?"

can't see a gasket on the SC light units - http://www.partsbase.org/seat/ibiza...s-additional-brake-light-licence-plate-light/

but there is on on the 5 door light units - http://www.partsbase.org/seat/ibiza...s-additional-brake-light-licence-plate-light/

Thanks for that quick reply, in the proper VW parts listing, these gasket bits only appeared as part of a "repair kit" - mind you that was for the 2002> 9N Polo. So maybe it is back to trying another fix using the existing gasket and some gunge, thing is, there is no point in me just whacking loads of RTV in there as that will make changing a bulb very very tricky!

You want some of the self adhesive weather strip that people use for doors and windows

Well, I did have another go at fixing this, though this time after removing the rear bulb section and cleaning away the sealer I added to the gasket, I thought that I'd check that the front cover/lens was not leaking where it is bonded to the body of the cluster, so I placed it in the bath weighted down with shampoo containers etc and left it for a few hours. It had filled up with water - so next trick is to fill that bonding area with clear silicon - then reseal the bulb cover with some "semi permanent" sealer - so that it can get opened in the future!
