There are some new threads about RNS 510 alternatives here, but nobody mentioned RCD 510. It's simply RNS 510 but without navigation (and it is much cheaper). There is no SEAT version, just VW one. I would like to know if anybody fitted such unit in his Leon Mk2? Is it plug&play?

I can have one for about 200£ while the cheapest RNS 510 is about 500£ (both used, both VW ones), so I don't care about HDD (4gd SD is enough for me) or DVD playback.

For £200 I'd go for it :)

+ The MDI Media in will work with the RCD510 too, which would give you full ipod functionality or the option to connect a USB Hard Drive, depending on which cable you use :)

not really seen the rcd version, if your not looking for sat nav then that would seem to be the best option its just a shame it will say vw when you turn it on

Hi Noktoto,

Could you please tell me if you installed the RCD 510 without any issues & do you have an IPod link installed? If so, which one??

Cheers.

I fitted an RCD510 to my Golf and quickly changed it to an RNS510 a couple of months later.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good radio, but there isn't a great amount of difference between the 2 if you shop around on eBay, it will be the same procedure as installing an RNS510 except without the GPS aerial / coding for gateway needed.

I would say you'd also need a CAN Gateway version L or higher to be on the safe side so as not to worry about battery drain.

Ive had my rcd 510 for a few months now with everything working including a seat splash screen on start up. DAB reception is excellent even in Matlock where I used to lose signal as soon as I got into town! Only problem I have with it so far is getting a decent sound out of it. Dont know if it needs an amp or better speakers but Ive found little help from any audio installers in the North East

As said on previous posts mine was also plug and play and I have the same sound quality issues. I'm going to see an indy this morning with vag com as there are some changes you can make to improve the sound quality - listed in the my gti site under rns 510. I've decided to go down the amp and new speakers route, Herts EP4 amp, Hertz ESK 165 components up front and ESK 165 coax in the rear. I am getting the indy to change it to low level output and flat equalisation. All happening today so I'l report back later.

Ive ordered a vagcom cable from DH gate. From what Ive read this cable seems to give access to more functions and allows you to change more of the settings. Hopefully this will let me change the eq settings etc.
Really want to avoid extra amps if I can, Think Ill start with speakers but still not sure which ones are the best. So far ive been looking at focals

Ok I went to the Indy yesterday morning who looked through the Radio, coding and extras areas of vcds and couldnt find anywhere to change the settings! So I went on Car audio and Security to get the amp and speakers fitted. Since the Hu was still outputting high level I opted for an Audison high to low level converter box for £70. It took the entire day to fit mainly due to the fitter having major problems reassembling the mk2 FL door cards.

It took some messing around with the settings but I now have it sounding fantastic!! Just need to let the speakers bed in a little. I have pushed the treble right up, bass +5 or so and mid minus 6.

Tundrarocks - let me know if your vcds cable lets you see where to change the settings.

I have to collect the cable tomorrow from the post office so will have a quick play about with it tomorrow during my break. Im just going to try following this link to see if I can make any changes

Do you have your amp hidden away? If you dont mind me asking how much did it all cost including fitting?
Ive read taking the door cards off is a total pain so I think Ill be leaving it to an installer to work on!

I was tempted to just get an rcd510 to replace my rcd310. After reading about sound issues ive decided an aftermarket is probably better! Dont want to spend on amps and new speaker etc. if the sound quality can be improved by an aftermarket unit which will be better and quicker, also will include bluetooth, so can get rid of my parrot :)

Sounds like it will cost around £400 for the stereo, amps and speakers, plus i'd want professional installation probably!

yes I printed that off and took it with me, but of course there is no navigation option. all the radio and sound type option didnt give the drop downs or it was only Cd changer aux etc. I managed to get the amp off ebay for £99 brand new (hertz ep4) the speakers were about £250. With fitting inc speakers and audison box (not including the amp) it was an eye watering £590.00. so add in the amp @£99 and £150 for the HU (again ebay bargain) and £98 for the DAB aerial, and it was £940 all in. Actually that's the first time I've added that all up - was it worth it, probably not really - but it does now sound fab - I'll be keeping the Leon fora while. Hope you have better luck!!
