Question on FR DSG box - how smooth?

Hi,

Picked up my new FR DSG 08 last week and love it!

One question though - I know the engine needs a good running in period but should the DSG box feel really smooth when changing up/down in normal D mode?

Mine feels a little cluncky at times and i didnt expect to feel the gears changing.

It can be better if I switch to tiptronic mode.

If the box needs more running in I guess it will get smoother

The DSG should be smooth. Mine can jerk a little when it goes in to 1st, but not much.

I find D is too eager to change down too many gears. e.g. going from a 50 zone on a Dual Carriageway to 70, if you floor it in D it will likely go from 6th to 3rd whereas I would have gone maybe to 4th. This can be a bit jerky. Even when I was running mine, in the example above, if I only applied about half throttle, it would change down to 4th and the RPM would go quite high. Certainly higher than I would have wanted. My advice would be to run it in using the paddles. I did read somewhere that the DSG adapts to your driving style but I wonder whether that was a load of billox.

Mine can be a it chunky when you let go of the brake and it put´s in the first gear, but that´s the construction.

The DSG/S-Tronic boxes are superb and do adapt to your driving. They are able to memorize change patterns and this in turn allows the box to pre-empt your up/down change.

There isnt a ''paddle'' type box on the market that is as clever as the one from VAG group, including Ferrari, etc

Well I confused mine totally this morning when I went down to 1st instead of 2nd... Whilst the box won't let you damage the engine, I sometimes wish it had ears and would show some mercy!
