Purge Valve

So..I've been looking at an FR. It went through a service and MOT today, but the dealer has told be that the MOT station suggested replacing a "Purge Valve" as a check engine light came on during the MOT. Now....what is a purge valve? Could it chuck up the engine warning light, and or should I steer clear of this car?
nB the dealer is offering a 3 mth 3000 engine and gearbox warranty so I'm wondering if he gets it all fixed I will be ok to move forward. Any assistance would be great fully received.

Could be the evap n80 control valve. Get them to replace it if it's under warranty.

So how critical is that part? Is it a big issue I.e it could evidence main engine problems (which I should avoid) or it is just one if many I'm sure smaller part which help make cars these days better and more fuel efficient, but tend to throw errors when dieing?

Not a major problem - its more of an emissions thing.

When mine started playing up (faulty charcoal canister) i didn’t get an EML, just a code stored in the ecu, although mine only happened a handful of times before i had it sorted under warranty. I imagine the frequency of the fault will have an effect on the EML?

Is this the same thing?

Yes that sounds right from memory. Unfortunately i didn't need to investigate any further as the car was still under warranty. Mine was the charcoal canister itself but it could be a number of things. Some more info here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16825/P0441/001089
