Problem - Warning light flashing on temperature level

Saturday night I started my Leon Cupra R and it gave me an audible warning as well as flashing the red light on the temperature guage. I looked in the manual to see that it recommends you put some more coolant in, But it was 2 in the morning and I was parked in town, so it's not something that was easy to do.

I switched the engine off and on again and luckily the warning light didn't come on again, so I thought it was just a gremlin.

However, I started my car this morning for work and the audible warning came on again along with the light. This time I opened up the bonnet only to find that my coolant level is WELL above the minimum level indicator on the bottle. The only coolant I had to hand was a 11 year old bottle that looked a bit dodgy (Does it go off? It's just water and anti-freeze, right?) so I didn't stick any in and so I just took another car to work (not wanting to be late)

So what could be the problem? Both times it was fairly damp outside and on the way back on Saturday night my petrol light came on. Could either of these affect the warning? I wasn't sure if it was safe to drive or not.

Happened to me atfer owning my LCR for about 6 weeks. It was going in to the garage for new front pads so I asked them to look at the collant as well.

They said that it required topping up.

It happened to Nyteshades TDI. But for that it was the coolant sensor stuffed! Seat had to change the header as the sensor is moulded into it, apperantley??

I'll go buy some fresh coolant tonight and top it up and if that doesn't solve it then I guess i'll have to take a trip to the dealer to sort it.

Shame they are 25 miles away :(

Why not just top it up with water???... :weedy: When mine did this BTW it was the coolent level sensor in the header tank.

This did happen on mine a lot in the mornings first thing. Coolant was full but apparantly there is a fault on a sensor that has been known. Only fix is replacement bottle and sensor, when I enquired they will not do so unless they see the fault at the stealers first hand. Needless to day the car had warmed up once there and the light never came on....!!!

Does it show in the error log?

Got to take the LCR in for this fault on Wednesday and the first thing they're going to say is that there's nothing wrong, unless there is something in the log. And it only happens when it's a very cold morning.

The ECU used to log a crank position sensor error on mine, god knows where it managed to get that from. Dont think there is a direct error for the coolant sensor. Ended up leaving mine with the dealer overnight.

Thanks for the suggestions, I did indeed end up topping it up with water Cupramax, even though it was already quite full. It didn't beep at me again though, yay.

Hopefully it's cured but it might do it again when it gets cold/damp in the mornings

Exact same problem on my car this week, the level is just above Min at cold and the engine gets to running temperature in the same amount of time as normal, plus it doesn't overheat so I'm not particulalrly worried.

I was going to top up but when I read the manual it starts banging on about G12, G11, G12+ for so long I wanted to kill myself. Why the feck can't they just specify one coolant so it doesn't turn into a drama?

Is there a Halfords equivalent does anyone know? I've got G12 (not + I think) it's reddish colour...

They are trying to specify one coolant, but also tell you which ones NOT to use.

I had to get some recently, and couldn't find G11, G12 or anything on Halfords products. However, there is another number quoted in the manual (774, from memory) which appears with VW and Audi references, so I used that.

this isnt right is it? Do we HAVE a solution? Or are we just gonna have to keep going back to dealers when it happens.
They are probably all gonna say - "nothing we can do, sir"...

problem i see is what if we are told to ignore it as "they all do that" and then something DOES go wrong??? We cant all keep checking our coolant on EVERY trip, surely?
