Just been to the local seat garage and asked for a major service and full cambelt change. its going to cost me £382 all in. does this sound about right. ive never had a car long enough to give it a service or a cam belt change so not sure if this is reasonable ha.

If thats at main dealer I'd say thats a very good price :)

Cambelt is usually £250 at non main dealer and by major service I take it you mean oil, filter, air and pollen filter, fuel filter etc? if so thats good.

Also says check air filter?

are they just checking or replacing stuff? theres an awful lot of checking and not a lot of replacing?

So your paying all that money just to check stuff............and if it needs replacing that bills going to double......and cambelt def needs replacing every 4? years

I'd check excatly what there going to do, your first post is a good deal at main dealer the list of actual stuff is rubbish value in my opinion.

think ill go back down there on friday lol. how i understood it was that they will check these things and if its ok then leave it but if it needs replacing then replace it without an extra charge. not too sure now tho. £400 worth of work. they must have a high hourly rate then lol

I expect there £40-50 an hour? plus parts? and cambelt is not a 5 min job.

There gonna charge you a good £100 just for the parts for belt change [belt, tensioner kit, water pump]

Oil is about £30 filter prob about £5-6 air filter and pollen filter £20-25 fuel filter about £12-15

Plugs are 10.50 each for the genuine ones so thats another £50+

All this is plus labour so its going to cost at a main dealer.

And I'm pretty sure cambelt is 60k or 4 years? it doesn't matter if they take cover off and say it 'looks' ok....it definatly needs replacing if its due :)

car is 2001 and on 108k. so its not quite there on miles but as i didnt get a service history with the car i dont know when it was last done. hense me going to get it changed and likewise with the service. either way it needs doing so just gonna have to splash the cash and hope it is only the £382. running a car aint cheap huh lol. i replaced my spark plugs a cpl months ago. the dealer said they will replace the plugs if they are the original. i kept the ones i took out but how do i know if they are the original ones? might just stick them back in so the garage give me a new set lol

As said cambelt at a dealer is usually 400+ just for belt change.

Its approx 250 at a non dealer garage.....depends where you go really.

Yea think its due at 60k, the dealer changed it for me as the car was showing 62k, and there was no record of it being done in the service book.
Think I paid about £200 from an independant VW specialist last time I had a belt done.

From your list your not getting a good deal at all as it says check and not replace.........if however they are going to replace then yeah thats a cracking deal from main dealer :)

well yeah fingers crossed they mean replace too lol. if they dont then ill just cancel the service and just have the cam belt changed for £262. just spotted on the sheet they gave me it says ( check = inspect/top up/report) does top up also mean replace maybe?

I wouldnt have thought so!
I work in the service industry, and if it says:-
replace - then thats what they will do, and it should be included in the price
check - they will have a look, and if they think it will last (educated guess basically) leave it on
check/replace if necessary - They will look at it, and if they think they can get away with charging you for a new one, fit it and bill you extra
check/top up - check it, and just put in a dash more if it needs it (fluids usually)
scheduled replacement - something that should be replaced at a fixed interval (cambelts = 60k as a matter of precaution) irrespective of condition of old belt.

Unfortunately, due to the state of the economy, people wont give anything away for free...

Dont forget, £400 is a hell of a lot cheaper than the result of a snapped cambelt!

Hope this helps, or at least prepares you for a big bill!

Happy motoring,
Dan
