Has anyone had any issues with their power steering? A mechanic mate of mine carried out some work last night, but when I picked the car up I could hardly turn the wheel so I didn't even tried to drive it. It's a mk2 leon. Anyone had anything similar?!!! Also the red steering wheel symbol came up on dash too.

Angle sensor

Funny you should say that mate. Just got a phonecall from the garage to say and angle sensor code was flagging up on their ecu reader. So looks like I'm needing the steering rack replaced. Been offered a 2012 audi a3 170 tdi 6 speed rack for my car. Would that fit my 56 plate leon? I've heard the steering rack 'gens' changed a few times

Your going to need a new wiring harness to go from the existing loom to connect to the steering rack. Its about £100 from a dealer, and its a dealer only part.

Thanks mate.

Small update. Booked the car into a private garage...and after 4 days they had no idea what the fault was apart from the code that flagged up.

I then panicked and phoned seat to book the car in with them, if they could confirm they would be happy fitting second hand parts. They said yes and so I took my car in.

A day later they called me back saying they found the problem and the have a solution. The problem was the fault code G286 or whatever it was, and I'd require a new steering rack.

I thought ok thats not too bad as I've sourced a fully tested part from a breakers in England.

The dck then said oh no sir, we only fit brand new parts and this will cost you 1500 quid. So I told the guy to lock my car, don't touch it again till I come to collect it as I've been lied to and they are trying to mug me off.

So I called a power steering specialist in Glasgow who will recondition my current rack, or fit a reconditioned rack and recode it to suit, all for under 400bucks.

Happy days - the car is going in tomorrow once I collect it from seat and pay them their 70quid diagnostic fee.

Cnuts!!!!

Had the same fault and it was alot simpler than initially thought. Had some work done to mine and the power steering messed up.

Havent been on here in a long time but if i saw this post i would have advised you its as simple as re calibrating your steering via the method on the ross tech website. If that fails then would have been one of your wheel speed sensors are not reading at the correct speed compared to the others.

MidlandVW solved mine for me in the matter of an hour but glad you sorted it and definately was not a steering rack job unless you had work done on the rack
