Well after having a few arguments with Seat ref my poor fuel economy I found out the problem yesterday went to visit Charlie at Surrey Rolling Road ( Nice guy ) and he advised me that the K+N Panel filter I fitted after getting my FR TFSI was the problem. The thing with these filters is they are oiled and the oil had got in the Air flow sensor and knackered it so the ECU was over boosting the turbo and over fuelling the engine badly so my 20 mpg was cleared up easily. I have to now decided wether to go back to a original panel filter and improve my consumption or stick with it as the power run showed I was getting 217 bhp nice !!!!!!

Word of warning these engines do not like K+N Panel filters.

Did you get a run with the standard filter? Perphaps the overboosting caused the extra power, rather than the filter increasing power. Could you notice a difference between the standard and K&N jobbies?

No did not do a run with a standard filter and yes the overboosting was caused by the oil on the filter clogging the air flow sensor and then the ECU get's all confused and makes a few changes to the way your car runs : ie low fuel economy and very sooty black exhausts. When I fit the standard filter back over the weekend I will let you know what the performance difference is.

Sounds like the K&N has too much oil on it or the oil has been applied to the wrong side.
I've run several other cars with K&N filters and never heard of this problem. If filter design is at fault I'm sure K&N would like to know about it.

this has been covered many times before.. The maf on the 1.8t engine doesnt like oiled filters very much!

But this is a 2.0 T ??

Although yes could be the same issue with both designs, but i'd guess this is the first one to prove it though :)

Pretty sure the oily MAF thing turned out to be red herring (tales of MAFs dripping with oil but still working fine).

We know for sure that they don't like :

1) Shocks
2) Vibration
3) DPJ ;)

on the 1.8T most oil killed my MAF compaints were the likes of overoiled foam filters (PiperX etc) or in the main the PCV oil breather system venting right next to the DV which blew the oil fumes back to the MAF sensor.
