possible dmf noise?

hi all, i have a 2007 bke altea 1.9 td reference, i think the dmf may be starting to go. the car before i got it was my sisters and when she bought it we noticed a tapping noise at idle, didnt know anything about dmf's at that point so nothing was done about it. The car still has the same noise, more noticeable when the car is warmed up fully and the noise goes away when the clutch it depressed. if you release the clutch pedal while in neitral as it hits roughly where the biting point would be there is a slight grinding noise on the way up?

I havent noticed any of the other signs i have read on here such as slipping clutch, juddering. to be honest the car seems to drive fine, other than the noise at idle, sort of an intermittent knocking, seems to emmit from the passenger side of the engine.

I think it may be the dmf as said, but not 100% sure, the car has 85k miles and has always been looked after.

Any ideas on what it might be, possibly dmf on its way out, like i say its been the same for about 2 years with no juddering etc, if it is the dmf what is the likely cost to replace?

any ideas appreciated

Seems like is the DMF, they are not a lifetime part so at 85k miles with possibly the original part, you've done well.

I got a Sachs clutch kit and DMF for £350 plus fitting, false economy not replacing it all together.

its just odd that i dont get any of the usual symptoms, the car drives great, pulls well, no clutch judder. just the noise?

The tapping noise is a usual symptom, especially when it goes if you depress the clutch.
I replaced my DMF/clutch on a BKD at 65k which was tapping horrendously all of a sudden. Caught it just in time.

Slipping clutch is a problem with the clutch plates, they are probably ok.

The DMF is designed to absorb vibrations somover time will begin to break up itself.
It is a lot of money to out out though so a test drive at a trusted garage should help confirm what it is.

the car was my sisters, she.... for some stupid reason took the car to halfords for its mot and service and the did put on the advisory clutch judder due to dmf. now i dont know what the hell they are on about, there is no judder, the car has made the noise its making now since my sister bought the car in 2012. ive read allsorts about release bearings, input shaft bearings as a possible cause. Ill get my uncle (a mechanic) to look at it, im hoping it wont cost an arm and a leg if it needs doing, i know you can buy the dmf and clutch kit for about £200 - £300 and then probably that again for fitting. Hes serviced the car in the past and never mentioned the noise?? like i say its always sounded the same. non rythmic knock with the clutch out, grinding type noise as you press the clutch in, then all noises go away once the pedal is fully pressed.

Mines just gone too cost me £122 for single mass conversion with clutch and pressure plate and £110 labour. Go for single mass conversion lasts a long longer and not much difference.

Does it drive ok on the solid flywheel? Did u get the clutch done too? I hear its best to get that done while your in there. Where was your flywheel from?

Hi if you convert to single mass setup then you have to change clutch and prrssure plate. Dmf has springs in flywheel and smf has no springs in flywheel but it has springs in the clutch. Drives perfect no differnce clutch is tiny bit heavy and biting point is at the bottom bow but drives perfect. I bought it of ebay person called techniclutch. £122 for 3 piece with no release bearing and bolts. Its well worth going smf.

Had a similar ticking with my 2.0 140 thought it was DMF until diagnosed as Heat Motor Switch was faulty which was making the ticking noise

i have all these symptons apart from a noticeable change when clutch is pressed
i do have alot of vibration through the clutch pedal...it gets worse with speed. ie lightly pressing the clutch half and inch while in motion...it sends vibrations straight to your hip! lol
also the gear change can be a lil jolty too. im in for a SMF conversion at a local specialist

its a National SMF kit fitted all for £300, I have a freind with the same kit on a golf 1.8t pushing out 350bhp!!

there is no slipping noise knocking and its as smooth as silk! the only time i have heard of some of the SMF kits being an issue in terms of noise etc is on the 6 speed tdi

Its been the same since 2012 when my sister bought it. Gets knockier when the cars warmed up. No vibration in pedal or anything. Bites well. Pulls well no juddering. The last mot was done at halfords and there is an advisory stating dmf noise and clutch judder. Ok ill admit the noise but there is no judder or slipping. Cant really afford it sorting as yet. My sister is terrible at riding the clutch and did do for 2 years which wont have helped but it sounds the same as it always did. A family friend usually does the mot and he never mentioned it in the past. Hopefully it will be ok until i decide to change it. Smf looks like the way to go. About £100 cheaper than a dmf and will last longer. Thanks for all the info.
