ive been reading about gearbox's and come to think of it mine whines... but i thought that was just my clutch because the thrust bearing had gone in it, if im driving it sound like something is rubbing but i put my clutch down and it stops... and also since my clutch went theres no drive in 4th, it goes in but accelerate and all it does is rev... and also since my clutch has gone theres alot of rattleing and grinding... does this meen my gearbox is also dead...? i went under my car earlier and had a good clean up under there and found my gear box is a genuine part because of the vw/seat/audi stamps and the part number, ive read that 085 boxes die around 50-70k miles and mine is on 111k.... :/

any enlightenment would be great

Cheers, Ieuan

If you've worn your clutch down to the metal its possible that some of the very last bits of friction material have broken off and are making nasty noises

wires off
cables off
gearlinkage off
most gearbox bolts out
drain box
ball joints out to get driveshafts out of the gearbox
engine stand/beam
undo box mounting
undo last bolt on box
wiggle off
and its off.

i think you may need subframe off.
