I am considering changing my current car (07 seat leon fr tdi) for an 05 seat leon cupra r 225ps with 16k miles as im not doing alot of mileage anymore. I would like opinions from owners of these cars in terms of performance, reliablity, running costs etc.

you will miss the torque levels of the TDI and gain a quieter revvy engine.
and you will be trading 48MPG for 25MPG.
you will be trading a newer generation chasis (1P) for an older (1M) chasis.
I have a TDI FR but sill miss the 1.820vt.

Performance is good even from stock with little turbo lag. I have never seen my car touch below 25MPG and that's when driving it a quite hard, if I am sensible with no harsh acceleration then 36MPG is easily achievable. Tax is £215 per year (£245 per year from April 2010). They like V-Power or similar so it'll pay to fill up at Tesco or Shell for the rewards.

Why not just remap the TDI?

So you want "an 05 seat leon cupra r 225ps with 16k miles" eh?

Well that's uncanny, it's exactly what I bought 6 months ago, same miles same year. I love it to bits.
JamJay might be slightly optimistic in saying it'll never go below 25 to the gallon, I remember when i took it round Lydden Hill I got 6.4...

If you're used to a diesel, be prepared to spend some money on her, but I feel that since you're going to spend a fortune keeping anything on the road it might as well be something special. Just bear in mind that the bits do add up (things like tyres, petrol, tax, insurance, ARBs, remaps etc).

Honestly though mate, if you're after a practical motor that goes like a rocket you won't regret it.

I have never had any problem with my LCR, (touch wood), consistently get 33mpg, running cost is higher, petrol, servicing etc.. and then if you start modding, well its a slippery slope in remaps, silicon stuff, shiny bits and a hole in your pocket, but in my opinion worth every bit of it.

Would you not look at the new k1? Also would the TDI not hold its value better, they do in Ireland and the LCR plummets.

Mate - you will love it, Diesels are great but for that every day short trip to work they are pointless and dull in comparison to a petrol

I had the Cupra TDi whilst it was great car and i got good MPG the Cupra R was calling and upon driving it was a whole new experience... everything felt better even though it was the same year car.

However the new leon has some nice features, inside everything is alot better the mk1 which uses the same Audi dash from 1998. The Seats in a MK1 are horrid

I've gone from a re-mapped 320D M Sport (approx 185bhp / 290ft/lb) amd have just bought my first LCR. I must admit that it took me a while to get used to the power delivery and the LCR does feel slightly flat at lower revs. But, once the revs build and you can hold onto them longer the LCR is so much fun!

Do it - you won't look back.

as a TDI FR owner, the diesel noise makes you lose respect espesially at low revs when you are trying to sneak in to your neigbourhood at night.
i must say, i really do think about going back to the petrol 1.820vt but the running cost just puts me off.
