The time has come for me to as for help!

Story goes as normal for a pd engine on high miles.

Brought the car last year at 82k and found number 2 glow plug not working - cant change it as some bellend has snapped and the top is just turning and the bottom threaded part isnt but I replaced the others glow plug all ok - didn't prove a problem last winter.

Then I encountered a random jolt/stutter but it happens once in a blue moon when cruising along and you come off the throttle and go back on. couldn't find any fault codes or anything other than a fair bit of smoke when starting from cold in winter or summer.

Engine started getting noisier between 90k-105k
Good old Chocolate camshaft!
So I replaced the camshaft, lifters, cambelt kit, and did a full service oil fuel and air filters.
Cranked over for ages to the point where my battery nearly went flat completely.

Since then the engine itself runs nicely when driving along but the 1st start in the morning from cold has deteriorated alot to the point it coughing and chugging to life with a cloud of white/grey diesel smelling smoke behind. this happen before the recent cold weather
It feels as if the fuel it draining back over night.

Parts I've replaced which are common problems - all genuine vag
Fuel filter tee piece
tandem pump gasket
injector loom
coolant temp sensor
fuel temp sensor
maf sensor

Egr is clean and functioning ok
Fuel filter is new withing 5000 miles
cambelt torsion showing 0.6 in vcds
Glow plug light comes on and off normally only fault code is number 2 glow plug
Can hear the fuel tank lift pump working

Once the engine has started the engine misfires for say 5-10secs then clears and runs fine returning 48mpg-50mpg average

I'm trying the clamp the fuel lines trick tonight to test to see if the tandem pump has failed when the fuel filter was changed and possibly run dry when cranking for so long.

Other than that I am missing anything as all I have left are the expensive things tandem pump or injector seals at fault?

such a lovely car till now :(

Just thought i'd update this thread

Pulled the cam cover off and found the new cam I had fitted which I brought new from redmans engines has snapped after the lobes for cylinder 1. So I have 3 cylinders with smashed lifters and bent valves after less than 3000miles!
