myself and a friend r gunna take the gearbox off of my mrs's polo sdi X reg (its had it and needs re-con). Do we really need to take the complete front end off of the car to get at it/get it off. Or can we work around this? Cheers.

lol, taking the front end of would just be for fun...
jack it up as high as you can. 1st job to do is free up the driveshaft bolts - on teh gearbox flange. tight as you like.
drain the oil out & get something soft under the box 'incase' you drop it. which you will - it's fookin heavy.
it's a most rewarding straight forward job to do.
Haynes manual was pretty useful when I did mine - if you have an Ibiza one - it'll be the same... 085 transmission I suspect
