2nd time tonight I walk past the back passenger side of my motor and get a really strong whiff of petrol. Would I be right in thinking that there is a fuel filter under there somewhere. Anyone had one puncture?

I spotted petrol leaking out of a friends 20V Leon last month, that was comming from a hole in the fuel filter, but it was a short way in front of the rear wheel on the drivers side.

I had this problem, like Hairy says check in front of the rear wheel on the drivers' side for petrol dripping out. I don't know what they are called (filter?) but there's this little thing that looks a bit like a screw that goes into the fuel line.

If you still haven't found it, try this - had this happen on mine;

Lift the back seat bench on the drivers side and lift up the centre flap of carpet under there, you'll see a black plastoc cover screwed in with 3 screws, unscrew it and you'll see the top of the tank, it has a plastic collar that may just need tightening (like a big bottle cap).

Mine was loose and was spilling petrol all over the place and it stunk in the car and outside the car because it ran down the outside of the tank.

Its definatley dripping from the fuel filter in the drivers side. Its got a jubalee clip around it which may be cutting into it. I'll change it at the weekend.

Thanks for the response

Got the same problem - leaking from the filter(?) just in front of the back wheel driver's side.

Any advice on how you fixed yours appreciated.

What date did you warranty run out? Its 3 years from new on uk cars. Just a thought that it might still be active and you might be able to get a dealer to sort it for you cost free.

HELP PLEASE!

After spending a hour soaking in bloody fuel I cannot get the clips off that hold the pipes on each side of the filter. I'm sure there's just a technique for it or a tool but I can't seem to get it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Does anyone know how to do it?

Thanks for the thought but out of warranty last December. In the event it was a much lower-cost and simpler repair than I was expecting - £7.99 for a new filter and some messing around with the fuel lines to get them on and off.

Spilt fuel aside (I wasn't fast enough and the old filter held a lot more fuel than I was expecting!) it was as straightforward as it gets for a non-mechanically minded peson like me. May be the MY03 and 01 clips are different - with some jiggery pokery I managed to get them off ok.
