Passenger airbag deactivation

First post here,

Am just about to buy a 2005 2.0 TDi sport (Jan 05), never checked if it had the passenger airbag turn off that my leon does,

1. was it standard from the start or an option?

2. is the switch in the glovebox?

3. Is there a airbag off warning light?

Hope it has cos its handy for the child seat in the front sometimes!

Don't want to correct aceman ... as I don't know/remember the configurator-settings over in the UK.

But for my german model 06/2005 Altea SportEdition there was a selectabel option in the car-configurator for the deactivation plus additional switch in the glovebox ... and as it was a rather cheap option ( 0,00 euro :D ) I ordered it anyhow and I guess anyone else in our board did as well.

So you probably can't claim it was a standard option ... but I'd say you can be ~99% sure to find it fitted.

This is the issue of how specs change, in 2004, you didn't have that option, but I do have the switch. It fills this board up with whether I get this or that on a second hand car... still as I always say they still fit the crap speakers as standard, so thank god for that certainty.

Well I can't remember this ever being an option on the Altea around the time I bought mine (April '05) and I did go through the spec at the time with a fine toothcomb.

The main thing I would say to check is whether it has a spare wheel or not as this was a £30 option at the time for either a spacesaver or full size wheel, although at the cost of losing some boot space for the full size option.

Hi guys,

it's just because the sparewheel /spacesaver was mentioned as another option, I copied the car-configurator options my contract was based on:

Altea_Kaufoption5181.jpg

Here you see both the
- "Beifahrerairbag-Deaktivierung" (passenger airbag deactivation ... red dot)
- "Reserverad in Stahl" (full spare 205 wheel ... blue dot)

The space saver wasn't offered as an option until 08/2005 over in Germany, so for me it was either the TMS (tire mobility set) or the full spare.

And both options were free (0,00 Euro) in those days.

& that two layer boot is good as well which was on the originals but dropped off the spec now.

I don't know whether I should unburden my worries onto the site as to what happens if you have your air bag activated and have a front facing tom cat strapped into the passenger seat in a cat carrier and have an accident... I suspect he would not be amused with an air bag going off in his face.

BTW I'm sure you all know this the police get the air bags DNA tested when you have an accident if their is a question about who's driving. Presume match the blood on the seats and surround to the air bag.

Back on top think deactivation of passenger air bags is something that was put into cars years ago after it became apparent that you needed to with rear facing baby seats... they may never have been fitted without in the sort of cars that are equiped with them these days ie. only the rich had passengers air bags in the early days.

Klawit, my options were spare tyre less or full or space saver - pretty sure on the last two. Mines full sized, having had a bulging tyre on a European trip on a Sunday when everything is closed and having the space saver put on [$] to drive back from Luxembourg to London, opted for the spare :)... and I think I would gone, full size - that's what I got.

[$] don't do the dirty hands thing if I can manage it.

Spoke to the guy this morning and it does have the turn off, phew!

The car only has a pump and kit for a puncture, fine with me cos i need all the space i can get for my buggy, dog, child! Already ordered the parts for the sliding rear seat conversion from vw!
