Parts Required to Change a Head?

the aux belt tensioner would be worth changing while your doing the gasket.ive just changed mine.its held in place by a 13mm bolt that passes through the mount that houses the alternator and power steering pump.you,ll need a long reach extension and a ratchet to undo it.

Well, I managed to remove the timing belt tensioner stud using some mole-grips and now the new one is bolted on for easy removal!

My next problem comes because I snapped the inner timing belt cover when removing it and made the schoolboy error of thinking that the one from mOrk's 1.6 (AER?) would fit my engine (AEX). I've found the correct drawing on vagcat so hopefully will get a new one sorted out from the stealers later on today...

All fun and games!

Despite knowing the right part number (I think!) it seems that my local dealer will have to put it on back order which could take weeks to come...

I can get the part from the AER engine to fit but only the two mounting holes for the water pump and one bolt into the block will go in so I'm very reluctant to do this until the new part arrives.

Does anyone know of a quicker way of getting hold of a cover? Going to a scrapyard at the moment isn't very practical due to the lack of transport!

Cheers

Give your local VW dealer a call with the part number, thy may have it in stock, or if they're a group, someone in the group may have it in stock.

Cheers Tom, been emailing the dealer network like crazy haha.

Just a thought, would it be possible to run the car without the cam-belt cover (just short term until the part arrives) as long as I make sure that all of the hoses/anything else that could come into contact with the belt are secured out of the way? I really need the car running to go home from uni for christmas!

I've done it before but only for a few days, if you don't have an undertray fitted to your car, I wouldn't recommend it as stones and allsorts could get in there.

Managed to fit the timing cover from the 1.6 by cutting about 8mm out of it using a hacksaw :)blink:)

With that achieved I managed to get the belt on and started her up. It seems to run ok at idle but is quite noisy:

That video exagerates it a bit but it's representative.

Is it possible that the cam and crank aren't quite aligned right?

Cheers all!

Edit: Passed MOT, only needed two back tyres and numberplate lamp bulb! Seems to have quietened down nicely now as well, guess it was just a case of bedding it in and getting the oil circulating?

Will be changing the oil at christmas anyways, fun fun
