Painting Bumper Trim: Help & Advice

Right guys, bit of help required here.

Just gonna pop to Halfrauds to find a tin of spray paint to paint the lower half of the bumper. (The dark grey plastic stuff).

Is there anything I should do before going ahead? Sand down first maybe? Or just make sure it's extremely clean?

Cheers,

Mat

will it not have like a protective coating on the plastic that you'll need to get off before you spray it??

I haven't actually done any bodywork spraying myself so I'm certainly no expert, but i'd imagine Halfords would do it? If not B&Q. Remember youd obviously need a few tastey layers lacquer!

yeah, someone on local Chav, I mean Cruise site, has said sand it with 1200, primer, spray, laquer.

Such a nice day, was gonna clean car, thought I might aswell also spray trim. Rear is gonna be a pain, as I can't seem to get it off, so need to do it on car (weather best hold out and wind best not come!!!)

you will need:
1200 & 1400 grit paper(wet and dry stuff. Usually is)
Sanding block(will leave finger lines if you dont and will give a better finish)
Primer, gray or darker
Paint (obviously same colour as car. Lol)
Laquer and loads of it.

Take ur time when doing it and let it dry before adding more layers. When u come to the laquer you will need quite a bit. And i dont know whether or not but you might want to sand it back after wards. remember u can always start again if it goes wrong but obviously you dont want to go wrong.

FFS!!!

There's a few rivets holding the front trim to a plastic bit (looks like it's just a graud for the suspension or engine or summat.

How do I get the off! Tried allen keys, one is a fraction too small, other a fraction too big (3.5 and 3)

Right, ganna make this a kind of "how to" thread (will PM an admin about having an official one :D)

Ingrediants:

Primer, Colour Paint (to match the car), Laquer, Wet & Dry 1200 grit Sandpaper, Warm soapy water, Cloths & a towel.

Remove trim from car:

And you should now just have this:

(mine has the LCR splitter attached, if you have one of these, just remove it for the time being)

You then need to give the trim a good clean with some warm soapy water and then dry it. Next step is some dry sandpaper.

Get a sheet of sandpaper and smooth the bumper down as much as possible. Then clean again with the water and dry.

Now it's time to do the same with wet paper (well, i'm gonna go out and give it a try lol)

Primered:

That's one coat. According to the tin, give it 2 coats, about 10-25mins apart and let dry for about 45mins before spraying colour.

Time to go and start cleaning car whilst drying :D
