Hi,

Last night on my way home i noticed the temperature needle creeping upwards (Ive never seen it go abouve 90), and then an extremely loud fan came on!! I pulled over for five mins but after another 2 mins of driving it did the same.

Checked coolant level which was fine, checked the radiator but it was cold.
I am guessing water pump has gone?

Anyway, i ended up getting towed 65 miles to get home which was a complete nightmare. Gonna book it in to VW today, any idea how much this will cost at VW?

Any help is greatly appreciated:)

UPDATE FURTHER DOWN THE PAGE...

I thought it would be the water pump to be honest. Do we know how much VW/Seat charge to replace this part? And should I have the cambelt done at the same time?

Im gonna check the fuses today just to be sure first?

The car will be going to my local VW garage, do i just ask them to replace it with the metal impeller water pump if this is the problem?

Thanks

may as well do the cambelt at the same time as you need to remove it to do the waterpump. also replace the tensioner again for the cost its rude not to. awesome gti charge around £350 ish i read somewhere to complete this job. i'm purchasing the parts this week from vw been quoted around £60 for the bits and my mechanic mate is doing it as a favour as he owes me one.

UPDATE - Just got off the phone to VW, the guy said it sounds like the water pump, they have quoted me £320 for a new water pump, cambelt and tensioner etc.

But, he said it might be the thermostat, apparently the housing can crack causing the thermostat to get stuck. He quoted me £180 for this to be replaced.

I checked the fuses above the battery as someone mentioned above and they were all fine, which rules that out.

So think im gonna have to get the water pump done first as im pretty sure that will cure it, just wondered if anyone else has experinced the thermostat getting stuck?

And finally... Is the metal impellor water pump a genuine Seat Part? Does anybody have the reference number for it?

Thanks again for the help!!

i had the same, mate, try driving it at low speeds with low rpm, circa 35mph for a journey, if it doesnt overheat its your waterpump :) usually work at slow speed but with mroe flow the impellor strips

I had the same problem with mine, if I kept it under 2k revs it stayed at 90 but if I took it above that it would go straight to 120.

Apparently the impellor is plastic and cracks on the spindle, But I managed to order a brass one for it for £24 brand new and took it to my friendly neighbourhood garage and he charged me £70 for 2 hours labour and coolant.

ANOTHER UPDATE!......

Booked the car in to VW to get the pump replaced but neither VW or the 3 SEAT dealers I phoned have heard of this metal impellor water pump?

Where did you get them from? Is it a SEAT part and if so does anyone have the part number?

Thanks again

UPDATE AGAIN - Phoned VW again, and said can I provide the water pump, the guy said they can only fit genuine SEAT parts as their will be no warranty on work if they use a non standard part, which I dont really want to risk as they are doing my cambelt at the same time,

Asked about warranty on the part and he said if it fails within 2 Years it will be replaced free of charge. So unfortunately I am having to settle with another plastic one.
