Hi
My LCR temp gauge started to give me issues:

1. On startup, the light would come on indicating an issue with the coolant.

If i switch off and on again it normally clears. The dealer told me that this is a common problem with the overflow tank for the coolant - about £8 for a new one I think.

Im not overly concerened about this. IF it is true and not a related problem to the problem No2:

2. Recently my car has started to over heat when the engine is under load. Say 5th gear at 75mph. The temp progresses up to 120 and the light comes on. Obviously I no longer let it get all the way since it has happened the first time. I can maintain 60-70mph happily without any warning lilghts coming on.

The dealer replaced the fuse which is near the battery, as the fuse had blown. - previous threads refer to this issue and the temp sender ?? However this hasnt resolved my issue at 75mph +.

I checked coolant level, oil, the fan still comes on etc

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
mark

No.2 -

It's your water pump i'm afraid, don;t drive the car too far, the plastic impellar is broken in pieces and if it breaks up completely then you can say bye bye engine.

The problem is that the cam belt will have to be removed (may as well be changed) at the same time

I had one of these changed on my 2002 Cupra when the impellar finally went bang properly. They are really poorly made. Im sure we could do a nice trade in selling ones with a metal impellar instead of the plastic one thats standard.

Does anyone know of anything more reliable - as this is clearly a massive weakness.

Rubbmeister- do you enjoy tolling the bells of doom ? how sure are you of this ? The symptoms are not the same as last time one of these blew up on me.

Cheers
Mark

as Ruddmeister said get it changed asap as the pump can seize up which then snaps the cambelt causing alot of engine damage

Plastic water pump impellor on a metal shaft... very poor design!

Mine went when I was driving at a steady 70mph in traffic... first warning was the engine overheating suddenly...

Cool - Ill check it out. |Thanks. I spoke to a mate last night who just bought a 53 plate Passat 18T. His water pump just blew too.

Its daylight robbery. VAG should come forward and apologise, recall and replace with a proper part.

Ford V6's have the same problem too... (only know that from reading some of the Ford forums), so I would imagine there may be problems with other manufacturers also...

This is getting done under goodwill from Seat as this is the 2nd Seat Cupra Ive had that has suffered this problem. (and i complained to el-presidente about it). However I asked if they would fit one of the GSF metal ones. NONONO they said.

But i was assured that the ones they now fit no longer have this weakness. (likely story I wonder??).

Good opputunity to fit a cam belt though I thought ;-) so that come the big service it wont need one.

If you stil have the car at the next cambelt change then swap to the GSF type, all the cost in parts and labour is the cambelt......pump/impellar is £40ish from memory

noticed you said dealers had changed fuse on battery? if it was a 40 amp fuse then there,s a good chance your cooling fans are faulty? the fans will pulse on and of on fast speed causing fuse to blow. (faulty resistors in fans). simple check leave engine running and see if fans go:confused: : on to fast speed for short period of time under normal operating temp.

i'd say its the sensor on the coolant - i know of a few that have these symptoms and it cured them all !!! the coolants at the right level but its just goes screwey on the temp sensor

if it didnt fix it after that then i'd say water pump
