Well, I went to get our 2003 Seat Toledo 1.9tdi 110ps on Thursday this week for her MOT, she never made it to the garage as on the way there, as I began to accelerate the engine went onto three cylinders followed by a big ‘Pumpf’ sound, I immediately looked for a turn off from the main road and turned her off. I got her towed home took the engine cowling off to see oil plastered everywhere but no visible sign of what had gone. Checked with high powered light and mirror, first thing I saw was a small broken bit of ally sitting in the undertray, then I saw a hole about 13 mm wide and 30mm long in the front of the sump. I haven’t taken the sump off yet but I’m resigned to it being costly. So, I have 2 options find a replacement engine or despite her being for her year in really good order both body wise and interior having to send her to the Auto salvage guys. As you no doubt know when you’ve owned a car from new it becomes part of the family.
I guess what I’m hoping for it anyone in Seatworld aware of an engine of this type being out there possibly in a rear ended Leon or Toledo MK 2 , if not I’ll have no option but the salvagers.

Removed the undertray and found this in the sump, the small amount of Ally I found in the undertray with a piece of metal from inside. If you’ve never taken a sump off before you’ll never bother again. Talk about over engineered with hidden sump bolt making it all the harder.

Yes, They held the keys to the mystery. ‘Sump-thing else to look at and see what went wrong.

The Mechanic in me couldn’t not investigate what had happened, on removing the sump the hole at the front was matched by one three times as big at the back. The No3 conrod had snapped and detached from the piston but twisted and jammed between the crank webs, piston and other part of conrod still attached up in the cylinder. In all my years of driving (51) I have never had anything like this happen, guess it was down to metal fatigue and gutted that we’ll have send her nibs to the Auto Salvage.

19 years old did the maths. Back to looking for a replacement engine or scrapping it. Your post one.

Well having seen the damage done and the associated cost to put things right, it really grips me because the bodywork and interior are really good but reluctantly I will have to call it a day and call the Auto Salvage but not until next year.

Be a shame for it to get scrapped, there's usually someone willing to buy a good condition car

I would be happy to sell the car to someone who understands that the engine is blown and will need replacing, the Auto salvagers offered me £385 but if any Seat Toledo aficionados want the car I’d take £300 if you collect. If no interest then 2023 she will be picked up by the Auto Salvage team. Apart from the engine everything was working a okay.

Well, having had no luck I have sadly had to send Roxy to the Salvagers, after 20 years of service sad way to go.

I sent my brothers 18 year old ZX I sold to him that had sat on his drive for a year without starting after he died. The guy threw an old engine block on the back seat. Started first time and off it went to the knackers yard. You get fun after a relative dies that has a habit of collecting cars, engines etc getting everything cleared. Too much fun.

That does look to be unlucky. But proper job on the destruction!

Got my attention as I have the very same engine.

If there is a lurking material problem, cracks or flaws, engines usually go bang early in their life.
If engines survive their early life & are looked after, they usually go on for 200,000 plus.

Hard to see, but the crank or bits don't seem to be "blued" from an oil issue.

Had the car been through some deep water recently?
