My gearbox seems to be broken internally....so I'm in a dilemma:

Option 1 pay a garage to strip it down and replace whatever is broken.
Option 2 buy a recon gearbox and do a straight exchange.
Option 3 get my gearbox taken off and sent somewhere to be reconned.

Also whilst the box is off its been suggested to me that a clutch might be worth getting to save in the future.....think I've got the original clutch on 83k miles, worth getting a new one?

I would like to hear from as many people as possible as to what they would do, and also if anyone has bought a recon gearbox at all.

That doesnt sound like fun. I havent had to replace mine in my leon, and hope i wont have to. But i did have to in my Polo GTi i had before. I had the clutch replaced at the same time, due to a crack in the bell housing which in turn contaminated the clutch causing it too slip etc. I chose to source a recon gearbox myself. I got it from Goldings a company in Dartford (near Kent, they deliver/pick up etc) They do alot of VW gearboxes. They were very helpful, it may even be a worth giving them a ring and having a chat too them about your options. I can send over there number if you want. I dont think there is a cheap way out of it, unless you fancy reconditioning it your self...most recon box have 80-90% of the components replaced and come with a warrantee, whether this is 12,000 mile or a year...or both in my case, whatever came first.

I was looking to sell my car when it happened to me and had to fork out £550 for the recon gearbox (there will be a surcharge fee, until you give your old box back) and then another £380ish for the clutch and fitting of it all, which was done at another garage. An expense i didnt really need as you can imagine!

I got told that the 6 speed boxes were quite tough...

Just let me know if you want the number mate

I too have looked into this as my Gear box casing is crumbling.
My thoughts were that even a second hand box I would want opened up and checked over.
A reconned box I woiuld stay away from for my use as it will be track use.
I would in your situation find a garage to recon the box with genuine bits then atleast you know its done right, picking the right garage is the key to this one.
I have spoken the Bill (Badger 5) about this recently, he has a reputable garage he uses that he would and could recommend.

i paid 500ish for a recon gearbox and clutch in one job. i've had 2 clutches go in the first 50k miles on two seperate cars so with 80k odd miles on the clock i recon its worth changing to save yourself a headache i future

What the hell are you doing to clutches, 50k a piece!
500quid for a Recon'd box and a clutch is a decent price!

Anyone know if you need to drop the engine a bit to do the box on the LCR?

You just need to loosen the transmission mount that bolts between the chassis and the top of the GB.
The DBM will need to be removed but that aint a biggie
