As subject says, I've been told it's ok to run the engine with this disconnected (I'm trying to determine if the MAF is faulty). If the engine works ok with it disconnected, what's the point of this component?

It's ok to run it for short term, as in just to see if the car improves (meaning you have a faulty MAF)

Longer running without will cause the car to run too rich (i think) and will damage the engine

Its there for a reason, if the maf is faulty or disconnected, the ecu will use the default value as it cannot determine the correct air flow. The maf tells the ecu how air realy coming in and adjust the other compoments, eg fuel, timing, boost... so on.

The way i know if the maf faulty is use vag to show whats the max reading it give and if it below average, depening if the car is mapped or not.
