Oil...What to use in your TDI

Comma are very average oils, Halfords are as well, but I think Halfords may get get their oils from a variety of places as some people suggest they are from Castrol. It doesn't matter really, they aren't the same as the proper branded oils (ie Halfords synthetic is not Castrol Edge quality), they are low spec oils made to a budget.

Thanks mate. I did a search online and it brought up 05-40w for mine but these are 05-30w. Is there much diff? My engine is the tdi-pd

Castrol edge. It was via halfords website using my car reg. They also have the 5w-30 but it wasn't suggesting it for my car which confused me

It recommends the 5w-30 as this covers VW504/507 and that covers just about all VAG units both petrol and diesel on fixed or longlife including diesels fitted with DPF.

VW506.01 still has its uses on a handfull of VAG's, mainly the toe-rags but you dont see it around much these days.

Looking on the Q8 site, I think the formula V is 504/507 backwards compatible.

Have used Millers in the past, but they the garage (and a friend) reckoned that Q8 was decent enough stuff (usual BS about Castrol and paying for the name)

WOW! What a massive thread!

Big thanks to the clued up guys on here Oilman (Tim) and Viking come to mind (and others..)

I have a quick query, not the......what type of oil to use but.....my local mechanic has used 5w 40 PD (dont know what brand) in my 05 Plate Ibiza Cupra TDI.

Now I told him it needed 0w30 PD grade 506.1 / 507 but being a clever clogs he decided to put 5w 40 in.

He is being awkward regarding changing it, and I really dont see why I should fork out to rectify his mess up.

Two questions....do I need to worry?

Its done 98k, never gets driven hard cold and it will be changed at the latest in 10k miles.

Can you guys see it being a problem? Should I get it changed, or will it be ok?

Im relatively "basic" clued up about oils and what they do in engines however in real terms what is the difference between 30 and 40 grade in protection and wear and tear. I am not so fussed about the 0 - 5 rating as I know that the leon TDI 150's use 5w as a standard.

Also as a similar question, does anyone know why Leon 150's do have different grade to Ibiza 160's???PD's?

Thanks for your help!

Kind Regards

According to my database, the DPF and non DPF versions of the 04 onwards Ibiza Cupra TDi should use a 507.00 spec oil. I'm not sure why they spec the 507.00 for the non-DPF cars, are they on longlife servicing as standard? If your car is a non-DPF version, serviced annually/10k, then a 505.01 should be okay.

The 40 is a little bit thicker than a 30 when hot, but there's not necessarily a huge amount of difference.

Hi Tim, mine doesn't have a dpf.

The servicing is standard annual / 10k.

Would be really interested in why the leon 150 uses a thicker oil than the ibiza 160.

Strange! Thank you for your help

Hi Ollie

I'm not sure about the difference with the Leon and Ibiza, all I can see is that the Leon doesn't seem to spec a long life oil, which makes me think there is no long life schedule option with the Leon. Guy (the other oilman) has a Leon TD Cupra and I know he said there isn't a long life option for his car. If I remember correctly, the Leon is a PD engine and therefore needs a 505.01 spec oil (5w-40), but can also use a 507.00 oil (5w-30). I think the Ibiza engine is a different type, so doesn't need a 505.01 oil and therefore a 5w-30 is specced to try to get the best mpg.

Cheers

Not sure if any truth in this, but I was informed that you should try to use the same oil type/thickness that was originally put in from day 1? i.e dont mix different grades.
Anyone in Blaenau Gwent know best place to get PD oil for Ibiza tdi 130PD please?
