right I've been trying to get hold of carista but seems they are sold out now ue to popular demands so I looked at OBD2 something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-OBD2...054158&hash=item361f32c56b:g:L2YAAOSwxk9ZlVsH

what can you actually do with it? is it all unlocked via an app on your phone? i'm not looking to do too much, just home coming lights, beep on lock & needle sweep unless there's any other common things to add?

You can get a WiFi elm327 but the app(s) for Apple are not as good as Torque Pro.

Much poorer overall than vcds or obdeleven - but much much cheaper.

is there any that are any good for apple/ios software?

never used Carista but have OBD11,

From what I have seen Carista is good but not sure it has the depth of OBD11 (But as I say I have not used Carista)

Things I have done that I cant see on Carista web site are (but I am sure they are there just not obvious)

Front and Rear Indicators I have numerous options for changing the way the whole front and rear lights work.
Front Door Lights and the way they work during turns, reversing and modes
Turing of Torque Control
Resetting DSG behaviour
Battery Replacement

etc etc, its not sexy but its very functional and to me very easy to use, it also offers full backup of changes and history logs so you can roll back easily

I am very happy with an Android App, from what i can see on Carista site you pay for the dongle (like obd11) but you then have a yearly charge which you don't with OBD11, I also see that VCDS are now offering a 3 VIN licence to help bring people back in.

OBD11 has poor customer service but for me it follows the same logic as VCDS so its easy to find what you are looking for and there are lots of guys out there to help.

However i also use Torque Pro for visual stuff and also very happy with that so its horses for courses and people seem to get very hung up about IOS or Android, they are both in my mind tools to do a job

OBD11 and Torque Pro is what i went with and would recommend to any android user,

If you just want to see error codes and clear them then there are lots of cheap apps that use the OBD2 port and work fine.

If you are IOS then Carista seems the best from what i have seen but i am not an expert.

VCDS is the way to go I have it and it’s excellent you can find good clones on eBay for the latest version which will be fine as long as you don’t upgrade the software. Probably cheaper as well

whats recommended for ios software? only want to do little bits and tricks like homesafe lights beep on lock needle sweep etc

Carista seems to be good for IOS or (and i dont know if you can still do this) but older versions allowed you to dual boot your phone to IOS and/Or Android.

managed to get hold of carista now they're back in stock so not to worry :D

NO way would I do anything over bluetooth or wifi, had to many near misses. You can't beat a cable connection with VCDS also works out cheaper in the long run if you buy from ebay and don't update the software.

Well my view would be

1/ judging by the comments on the VCDS sites about people who use ebay cloned cables that they will not help, the following comment comes from an audi site but is common across the board

Sorry but this forum doesn't support the use of illegal counterfeit cables & I for one cant help any further.

2/ The fact that VCDS also offer a mobile version without a cable

3/ The fact that there are a number of VCDS Guys who use both VCDS and OBD11

4/ The fact that there are so many people who use both OBD11 and other mobile devices with no problem (myself included).

5/ The fact that on the OBD11 Forums the Bluetooth and Wifi issues are all around connections to the car and not about causing issues with the cars - no near missis that i have seen.

Tells me that these tools do what people need and are fully paid up to support the development team to provide support and upgrades

End of dad moaning

If you unplug the OBDII after you are finished with it and don't leave it connected when you are away from your car, you will have no issues with anyone connecting and doing what they like to your car from a distance e.g. opening doors etc.
