noisy start up

I have a 2001 Cupra and it is really noisy on start up when it's cold. It makes the whole dash rattle more than it does normally for a few seconds and sounds like and old diesel! It's not really noticeable when warm. Is this normal?!

This could be your SAI "secondary Air Injection" This only kicks in when your coolant is 5c+ if its under this it will be your choke m8. The SAI is much louder than the standard choke so this may be that.

I've been driving it today and on start up it has been fine, it only seems to be occassionaly after starting up on a cold morning that it does it. It only last about 1-2 seconds, so it could be the choke, it idles perfectly. It could be accentuated by the dash vibrating more than it normally does

The 1.8T sounds a bit chuggy on cold start-up anyway, seems to be a thing right across the range from SEAT to VW to Audi & Skoda.

Mine sounds strange like a heat shield rattle, only lasts 1-2 seconds aswell but its only about 1 in every 5 cold starts, but everything is solid. . . is this a similar sound?

Thats exactly what it sounds like, apart from that the car is spot on

Ive used the throttle to try and make it do it again by keeping it between 1 and 2k rpm but nothing. it only does it on start up. well at least im not alone. SAI has been said but it just doesnt sound like i would imagin that would sound.

I'm sure I remember reading that a rattling noise for a couple of seconds on startup can be caused by the hydraulic self-adjusters on the valves starting off in a default position then adjusting themselves to where they should be - I think it was perfectly normal (I hope so, because mine does it).

yeah i have a bumper/heat shield rattle for like a second on start up, only when its really cold but does it like once in about ten start ups! tis weird but it is cold and weird noises do appear, in the summer things are fairly ambient and warmed up things expand and dont tend to rattle, think your fine tho ive looked till im blue in the face, dont worry just enjoy!

Ive bin told tha alternator pulley can become noisy. ~I get a rattle and that when startin up cold but noticed if u put ur window down and press the rear window heater it gets louder and when u turn it off it gets quieter. Same if u turn air con on. This is coz your alternator is pulling more power to operate more things. Not sure if this is wot u guys r gettin but i get the same kind of noise at start up as u guys but also have an annoyin slight rattle when idle and noticed when i turned the rear screen on and tht it got louder and quieter, A mechanic then told me alternator pulley or somethin could need replaceing.
