Noisy blowing in engine bay

I recently got my Leon FR 1.8T remapped and now a few days later the car has developed a loud blowing which smells like exhaust. It started out just an occasional noise, now it has progressed to constant when the engine is cold, a little noisy when warm with no throttle and loud with any sort of acceleration or power.

My mechanical knowledge is pretty limited but from above the engine bay I cannot see any loose or cracked hoses. Parking one side of the car on the curb and crawling underneath doesnt show anything obvious although the view you get isnt particularly good or meaningful to me !

Vagcom shows no engine faults. I think the power is down (it seemed to be OK at first) but now it doesnt have the power but then it could just be me not wanting to use much throttle because the noise/potential damage.

I am thinking somewhere between exhaust out of engine and into turbo is the problem but I would expect some sort of engine fault in Vagcom if that was the case. Unfortunately I dont have full Vagcom so cant do requested vs actual boost.

Any suggestions ?

I had this problem a few times on my car and it didn't throw up a fault on my car.

It was the exhaust manifold gasket.

It was really bad when car was cold and sounded like a crisp packet was stuck in the exhaust when using throttle!

Thanks for the info, are these things before the turbo as I speculated and do you think they are an expensive fix ? I have an independent garage looking at it Friday morning

Plus side is that I am getting a lift from my boss tomorrow in his RX7 TT !

I had mine done under warranty, but I'm sure the gasket isn't expensive, just labour time to change it on top.

My local VAG specialist only charges £45 an hour labour, whats your independent garage labour rates?

Edit: What he said! lol

Lets hope they arent seized then !
I guess the increased boost worked something loose that was probably half way to loosening itself anyway

My approved warranty ran out in Feb so I will be paying, last time I had them do some work (on my last car) it was reasonably priced. Not sure on the actual price, they get a lot of business from where I work so I doubt they will try to fleece me.

Thanks all for the feedback, I am not too worried now and will be able to sleep properly !

Any news yet from your garage? :)

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a hole blown through in the secondary air system kombi valve adaptor plate.

£21 for a new plate and gaskets and about an hour to fit. Runs like a dream again now.

I had my gasket changed 3 times under warranty.

Also guess what mine is blowing now also!

So looks like I need a new exhaust manifold to turbo gasket again! :(

Quote from local VAG guy is about just over £100 to change it, he reckons about 1 1/2 hrs labour? @ £45 per hour + £10 gasket, which sounds expensive to me!

Going to get another quote from someone else too.

That does sound expensive especially if you know what is wrong with it and mine only cost £32.78. Not sure of the extent of the problem on mine but it was very loud on cold engine especially so cant have been much of a seal left.
