I'm having a problem getting my 1.8T into reverse... I've had a search and cant find any thread detailing the same problem.

I drove the car home last weekend and crunched out of reverse a little when reversing out of a parking space. Didn't think anything of it as it was no worse than normal. Went back to the car later in the day, and couldn't get it into reverse. Every other gear is as smooth as normal.

Basically, I can push the gear selector downwards but as i go to push it left it wont let me go any further than around an inch. I've driven the car since but its made no difference. I've had a play with the linkage under the bonnet and cant see anything fowling it. I've lifted the gaiter up and cant see anything stuck in there either.

Any thoughts / suggestions welcome!??

Cheers.

You've done what I would have suggested to be honest.
1st is still smooth? Clutch not on the way out? No rattles from the gearbox?
You need a box exxpert to see this, I'm trying to visualise how the selector works.
Could the 'selector' inside the box be stuck? Oil fine?
Try rocking the car gently a few inches back and forth in 1st with the engine off, then try selecting reverse, engine off, while rcoking very gently? Its not something you want to force for sure.
I know that I've not quite selected rev a couple of times and its made a horrible noise then been weird about selecting for a couple of seconds while I grope about like somethings moved out of line.

could it be the peddle box?

In my 1.4, it struggled to get in and out of reverse and also 1st gear, until it snapped/smashed

Just been out in the car to a local VAG meet. I wasn't looking forward to pushing it out of its space! Tried reverse and it went in fine... reversed up a couple of feet. Popped it back into neutral, had a laugh with the boys about it, put it back in what i thought was reverse, and it moved forwards! So it had selected first... weird. And couldn't get it back in!

I've not changed the oil since i've had the car (1200 miles) so perhaps I should do that.

Mines started doing the same thing. Was a little stiffer than usual putting it into reverse for a few weeks. Now every time i put it into reverse it puts the gearbox into first. You ever solve the problem????
