Newbie in need of advice, please!

Hey guys,

I've been a lurker for a number of months now, so I've just signed up hoping that you guys could give me some advice :)

A little about my background, I'm 19 in my second year at uni. I currently drive a Corsa 1.0 (00) and I've been hunting for a decent car for the past 3+ months and I haven't found anything that would hit the sweet spot for my budget. Me & my father have decided that would be better if we share'd a car as he drives when I don't need to and vice versa. I've managed to get a quote of £780 fully comp on my fathers name, so that's affordable.

Anyhow onto the car . . A couple of days ago, I test drove a 52 plate Leon TDI SE (110BHP). I thought it was a great drive, comfortable, fairly nippy and had pretty much everything I'd like in a car (TCS, CC, E/W, E/M etc).

The chap who's selling it lives a few streets away and knows my family fairly well. He showed us everything wrong with inc minute details, very honest and open about everything. Showed me all the paperwork and so on.

He gave us the keys and we had a decent test drive and it drove well. The body had a few chips at the front but they were fairly small. Overall body condition was decent, albeit a small dent on the back. Inside the car, everything was working perfectly fine, it was a little messy but nothing a valet can't deal with. One of the tweeters were dead and the tweeter cover was broken. The driver's side seal is a little loose. The owner had informed us about all that.

Onto the specs:

Silver
2002 (52) plate
93k Mileage
FSH with all previous reciepts/stamps
2 owners from new on log book but it's had 3 apparantly? Some sort of error, I was told that it hasn't been rectified, but that was from the very early start, so no biggy?
MOT & Road Tax til Feb 08

The mileage doesn't bother me much, as I feel it's got plenty of life in it and the engine was in good condition and looked well after.

His asking was £4.6k. I managed to bring him down to £4k. I think it's a decent deal.

I have a few questions:

1) On the original DVLA certificate it shows car description as 'SEAT LEON TDI SE'. However, under CC it has 1398? (1.4) under the description. This is obviously wrong which he pointed but he said it's not a problem at all. He said he'd contacted them regarding it and they were willing to rectifying it but he never got round to doing so. Shouldn't be a problem should it?

2) Below is a picture of the car. It has the following style alloys on it:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they're not standard TDI SE alloys are they? Would I have to declare them to my insurance?

And finally the most important part, any owners who'd like to shed some experiences on this car? Do you think it's a decent deal? Any words of wisdom before I do some final checks?

I'm pretty set to buy this (hopefully). However, a few friends have been rather reluctant on giving me the thumbs up. They feel it's over-priced for the amount it's been used.

I'd appreciate any comments/advice.

Thanks :)

Alright,
Car looks nice, that is the Leon Cupra alloys. These should be declared to your insurance company, it won't cost you any more on your insurance but you should declare it.
I'd be very warey of a few points
Why would someone point out all the bad points if they are trying to sell it?
Why has one owner not shown up on the documents?
Have you done an HPI check?

But to be honest if it was me I'd walk away. Too many unsurities (is that a word??)
Sorry to piss on your fire but you wanted honest opinions

id think the 3 owners, one could be the garage pre-registering it for their own sales figures

the v5 saying its a 1.4-that would make me walk away

1. lack of confidence or assurance; self-doubt: He is plagued by insecurity.
2. the quality or state of being insecure; instability: the insecurity of her financial position.
3. something insecure: the many insecurities of life.

Glad to help

Get everything sorted before you commit to buying it. If he "hasn't got round not it" and he really wants to sell it it shoots up a few alert flags.

me too.... I wonder how it taxes.

Also, going over the 'minute' details that don't actually affect the car is a good way to gloss over other things that you haven't seen

eg: look at this little crack in the speaker grille; why yes, all Leon's have 3 wheels

Na, sounds a bit shifty mate! Walk away! Loads more out there!
Oh and seems very cheap to start with AND he dropped another 600 quid off it!

Thanks for the prompt & helpful replies!

Just to clarify a few points:

1) The reason why we managed to knock off £600 is my father knows him and secondly he's desperate for money. That £4k price is also with standard alloys so we may be able to push him a little.

2) If he were to get the 1.4 issue rectified, would that make it okay?

3) Someone made a very good point about pointing out some minor issues to cover something large. We've checked all the possible things so I may give him the benefit of a doubt. He does also seem far too eager to sell it for my liking.

I'm not turning a blind eye at all, I told him that I'll be running some more quotes and I'll get back in contact with him.

Any more words of wisdom?

Personally, I wouldn't touch it - If there's something wrong on the V5 and you're the registered owner - you will be the liable one.

You don't want to fall foul of the DVLA - they'll tear you a new one.

If you were buying this from a dealer, you'd have some comeback, but privately you won't and he'd just plead ignorance.

A mistake on the V5 is never a good sign - it might be a genuine error, but you're always better off erring on the side of caution.

I walked away from a Bora 150tdi a few years back because it seemed too cheap, too good to be true (FVWSH, etc) and the salesman was dodgy. I still think I made the right decision.

As said above - there's plenty more TDIs out there.

As an aside - make sure it's had the cam belt (and pre-tensioner) done
