New Turbo or Strip and Clean?

Hi,
Just thought I'd give an update on my car.

Tried the intake cleaner - filled the street with smoke  The car certainly seemed a 'little' better, but the power was not there like it should be and car still went into limp mode. Also sometimes when accelerating (mainly in 2nd gear) between 1500 and 2000 revs the car would give a 'judder' a few times. Once it stalled the engine - like it had flooded it.

Anyway, I took it to a local injection specialists who had a look at the turbo and freed it up (for less than £100). One of the fault codes logged was the Air Flow Meter, but they said they'd checked that out and it looked fine - but that's not to say its not on its way out.

The turbo is now great. Its like new - except the judder is still there :(

The car is a standard 110 tdi - hasn't been chipped etc. only donme 41k miles. Any Ideas what could be wrong.

Will take it back in for them to have another look - but it seems its not connected to the turbo.

VERY probably an injection prob. Juddering is mainly due to overfueling [and is mainly detectable in higher gears] but since your car is standard I'd say probably an injection prob,,, some of the gurus here can surely tell you what to check with vagcom for injection issues.

This is cos he just cleaned the hot part of the turbo like did the guy in the link I posted in post #20. That was the rite thing to do,,, good job.

strange cos AFAIK the MAF doesn't give any fault code unless it's electrically fuct,,, when it gets dirty there's no fault code [quite obvisously]

Hi,
Yea I thort it would probably be an overfueling problem. Seems to only happen when in 2nd (sometimes 3rd) between 1500 and 2000 revs - at a lower speeds.
I don't have a vagcom so can't check anything out myself.
They had a sheet with the 3 fault codes the car had logged - and one of them I'm certain was the air mass meter.
Anyway, thanks for the input.

Yea, they must have had a vagcom, or the software on a laptop because he had the 3 fault codes from the car. Anyway he seemed to think the maf was fine.

So any ideas on the juddering problem anyone?

Happened on the last car, variable vane sooted up-was stuck in the fully open position! 58,000 miles luckly just within warranty! mechanic basicly said if it wasn't in warranty, advised a strip and clean, just a couple of replacement seals needed not a hard job, as just the outer case comes off to allow excess to the blades! as it was in warranty they replaced the whole lot, due to them getting money for the work and simpler to do. They were however suprised it happened at that mileage (they suggested more of the norm was 90k onwards on the ones they had seen before) still suspect the chip and all that extra soot , caused it!

Well i have just had a similar problem with a second hand garrett vnt2 turbo i bought. It got fitted, all was fine then the next day it was fooked, 1 vane had seized, and 2 had been flattened by the turbine slightly catching them so that fcuk'd that. Anyway had to buy a brand new one and now it is awsome again and also have the peice of mind that this one has warranty incase anything goes wrong. Was an exspensive learning curve and one that i wish i never experianced and i will never buy any major engine parts second hand again because if you cut corners, things happen and go wrong unfortunately.

Thought I would give an update on this in case anyone is interested or in case anyone has a similar problem in future.

It was decided that the turbo was knackered, so I had a new one fitted recently and now the juddering is completely gone - so it was clearly a turbo problem.
The performace is not back to 100% though just yet. I have a feeling the MAF might be failing. Had a similar problem on wifes old golf and it was the maf. Anyway, I'll see how it goes for a couple of weeks first (I've spent enough on the car for the minute and I've got the insurance, a service and MOT due soon!).

Seat rejected the goodwill gesture - they said the car was too far out of warranty.

shame that - local ford dealer has just agreed to pay for a new ABS module/pump assy for a 10 yr old 70k mile mondeo

i believe the guy pushed it reference the 100,000mile life expectancy angle

proabably cost him more than its worth in solictors etc
