Yours has done well. My 14 plate 1.2 had the same fault (needing a replacement turbo) at only 26000 miles.

Am I the only one who thinks failures like this on such low mileage vehicles is pretty abysmal? Clearly the quality of VAG engine components is sub-standard.

It's a real shame as we both love the car, when it works it's a great little drive and punches well above its weight. I was thinking of chopping in my Astra GTC for a Leon SC. Not any more based on this experience.

To be honest I had previously thought prolonged parking up had contributed to the failure, I was unaware of the known problem.
When the car was 9 months old, I left the country for 6 months, and despite telling her SWMBO did not use the car regularly if at all.
9 months later I left the country for another 9 months, and again she didn't use it much, and the limp mode started just before I came home.

My friend just rang me yesterday about his 3 year old sub 30k Golf 2.0l TDI. From new it has had an engine fault light that came on between services and they messed about with the fuel system and flushed the oil and then cleaned out the fuel rails and replaced some injectors but just one month after the year 3 service and warranty expired the engine blew up. He has been faced with a bill of 6k to get it fixed with only a 12% reduction on parts costs by the dealer.

I have suggested taking legal action

Quite right. There is obviously an inherent fault. Start mentioning merchantable quality and the Sales of Goods Act. If it works for an out of warranty fridge, It'll work for a car.
