New car ****ed engine

Sooo bought a 61 plate cupra from a marshall dealership about a month ago now for 8grand and after a couple of weeks noticed it was spluttering in 2nd gear, then the emission light came on so booked it in to have it looked at, i bought a 3 year warranty with a max value claim of the cars worth.
The code for coilpacks came up so they changed the coilpacks and spark plugs but said they took it out for a test drive and it still did not feel right and they put a camera down the spark plug hole and think they saw a cracked piston.
This was last thursday and they said it will be this wednesday before i get any updates on the issue as they need to strip the engine to have a look.

My question is, is the engine ****ed like i have read a lot about on the internet about the tsi engine being very unreliable and common for the engine to go and need a whole new engine replaced.

Also what are my options to anybody who knows about the legality side of things, i imagine i am well within my rights to get a full refund on the car as i only had it 3 weeks, however i did like the car and if they fix things under the warranty i will be happy with that but i would be worried about the future of the engine going wrong as it seems to be a problem engine in these cars.

It has only done 25k miles.

If they come back and say the warranty covers MOST of it but i have to stump up some of the repair bill i will be unwilling to do so seeing as i just paid 8 grand for the car and would like to know if i would be within my rights to reject the car and get my money back, i can't imagine why i would not be legally entitled to this.

Not sure what the actual terms are but I'd suspect the car is not fit for purpose under the sale of goods act.

I'd give the Citizens Advice Bureau a ring to put your mind at ease, I'm pretty sure you're entitled to your money back if you insist on it.

I'd be considering if you'd be happy for a brand new engine to be fitted by SEAT under your warranty if that was an option. This would come with its own warranty and would give you peace of mind.

No it is Vauxhall Marshall knebworth. If they replaced the engine at no cost to me I would be happy with that, I am just worried about any repair bills as I am unwilling to pay them seeing as I just bought the car a month ago.

I'd reject the car and get your money back.
I can't see them totally replacing the engine with a proper VAG unit,they are more like to do a repair,e,g, new pistons,but there are so many potential issues with the twincharger engine that you could be back to square one in a few months.
There are other decent hot hatches you can get for £8k that should be reliable.

The CAVE engines in the early cupras were not the most reliable, cracked piston, worn rings etc. What a lot of the dealers/garages do now is fit the internals of the CTHE Facelift engine into the block of the CAVE engine and do it that way. When seat changed the engine the block was still the same it was just the internals that was changed. Claim it from SEAT but dont allow them to put the CAVE engine back in, bug them for the CTHE or atleast the internals from the CTHE engine.

I had a Fabia vRS with the CTHE engine.
It still used loads of oil and I sold it after 18 months since I lost confidence in it.

or if going repair point out as a dealer they need to offer a warranty and as you have had the car only 3 weeks you are not liable for ANY cost.
I assume they are saying you need to contribute as part of the 3 year warranty. (which is effectively one they buy..) but this falls under the statutory warranty they must provide as a dealer.

but do listen to the little voice in your head, if you have lost confidence then i'd reject and walk away.

I'd take the car back and do a bit of research before your next buy, my mate had 3 cupras (that shape) engine went in all of them within 1-2 months of owning (dealers refunded cost of car every time). Bought a later model one and has had it 2 years now, no issues at all

Time to sell as the warranty expired

I trully dont know how anyone still considers buying a 1.4tsi

We bought a 1.2 TSi used with 43k on the clock 11 months ago. Fine for 10 months. Now we're looking at a turbo wastegate actuator fault that could need a new turbo at £800 plus labour and water pump on the way out. Thankfully ours isn't one of the early ones with chocolate timing chain issues.

Still pretty poor on a 40k 11 plate car though IMO.

1.4TSI is probably the wrost VW engine ever in terms of reliability.

I actually quite like the 1.2 TSi (when it's working right) It punches way above its weight and makes an entertaining noise, all the makings of a great engine, let down in the details. Reminds me of the Rover K Series (an engine I know very well) in that respect.

It's the earlier twin-charged 1.4 tsi that have the most issues.

The latest 1.4 turbo only engines are still called tsi so it's important to be specific to stop people flapping.

The latest 1.4 TSI engines from 14 plate and on haven't really had any reliability issues.

Yours has done well. My 14 plate 1.2 had the same fault (needing a replacement turbo) at only 26000 miles.
