My Winter Wheels Solution

I have a set of 16" audi winter alloys that I have used for the last 3 winters on my previous Skoda superb 170bhp which had 18" alloys as standard.

I was hoping to put these on my FR 184 as they come with 17" alloys as standard. Having read one of the comments on this thread, I'm concerned that they won't fit. Why did Seat CS advise against the 16"? Surely as long as they fit over the disc and calliper and turn freely (which they did on my Skoda albeit with not much spare space) it shouldn't be an issue.

Appreciate your thoughts.

As long as the 16" wheels fit and clear the calipers, they should be fine.
Just use the correct size tyre to keep the rolling radius the same.

I think SEAT say not to fit 16" wheels due to clearance issues. Some will fit while others will not depending on the design of the wheel, spokes, offset etc.

Hi Anthony - I had correspondence with Seat over the 16" issue for 2 reasons -
1. I had a set of 16" Michelin Alpin with another 2 winter's life in them and was considering buying 16" rims for the Leon.
2. I had a 16" space saver supplied with the car.

http://http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=398587

see post #13 on this thread.

It seemed odd that they would not say 16" rims were OK for winter and yet had supplied the car with a 16" spare and refused to change it for an 18" spare when asked!

In the end I opted for the 17" winter solution - I didn't want to give Insurance company any "wiggle room" in the event of a claim.

As sixysix said above as long as they turn without fouling should be technically OK, but I guess there is the chance of stones/grit getting trapped.

Looking good and very shiny [B)]
Reminds me a bit of a Civic type R from that angle

I think winter tyres are a great idea if and when it actually snows or becomes very icy.
Great on an open road, not so great when you have cars stuck in front of you with summer tyres that can't move blocking you're way

i thought about fitting some winters this year but I don't do many miles this time of year and can walk if it gets too bad out there.

I have some Audi wheels to put on, but waiting for some centre cap badges to turn up from Spain and hoping they turn up this week so I can fit the wheels before the temps really start to drop :)

Does anyone know what wheels these are? They look like 16" to me, which is what I want on mine. I've been keeping an eye open for some genuine 16" SE alloys but they seem expensive when they come up for sale, so might have to resort to aftermarket or steelies.

Never seen thos wheels posted, but they look very similar to these BMW wheels...

I have seen a standard set of 16" for around £500 with summer tyres, and also The standard 17" 5 spoke jobbies for around £800 with tyres.

Not cheap as not much choice I guess :(

6.5Jx16 ET46 with tyres 205/55 R16
7Jx17 ET49 with tyres 225/45 R17
7.5Jx17 ET51 with tyres 225/45 R17
7,5Jx18 ET51 with tyres 225/40 R18

Presumably this is the size needed regardless of tyre type?

I'm looking to get spare wheels and I've found some off an A3 on Gumtree. If they are 6.5Jx16 and ET46 they should fit my Leon I guess.

Is the 6.5j wheel width and the ET number offset?
