sounds like its coming along nicely there fella :)

i'd absolutely recommend the Revo map, as mine is running stage one and its lovely...a friend is running the AMD on his a3 but wasnt impressed as it started spiking.. not saying this is due to AMDs map... but mines not spiking from what i can tell (no gauge to confirm) but mine is certainly delivering the power smoother than his.

Very interested in this thread as i've just bought the same car - 53plate 1.8 20VT for £1500 which i thought was a bargain.
After previouslty having 2 V5's i'm happy to be back in a Tolly.

I had a Toledo 20VT with 249bhp and loved it :)

Enjoy!
What did you have done to achieve 249 ?? :)

I am doing this car strictly on budget items as its just not a good enough example to pour money into unless I respray it. It needs a new back seat upright (Leon Cupra style fabric (black/grey trim if anyone within 45 mins of Colchester has one), the paint work is pretty scratched up on every panel - mostly minor but to sort it out it would need a repaint which I'm not going to do for some time if at all. Also the driver door seal has started letting water in so it now stinks too!!! Door seals will get sorted next week and the carpet given a shampoo and dry to get rid of the smell.

All these things (except the paintwork) will get sorted as I drive it daily and I do like the car. I kind of like the fact it looks a bit tatty but because it has excellent mechanicals it has to be worth getting it to somewhere around the 220-230bhp mark.

Just hoping that it gets through the MOT without much effort so I can do the coilovers, before the remap........ oh and Snetterton on 24th Sept for a track day.

The somewhat crap pics from the Woodbridge day. The problem is that with a simple point and shoot camera you can't zoom in to the track - its too far away and there is only one corner that you can stand on to even take pics!

Passed the MOT today. One advisory that the brakes are pulling unevenly on the front (can't feel it on the road) so I have another little job to do there. Very pleased though. So.......now to buy the coilovers and maybe some braided hoses!!

Ooops - Not sure that we need 3 cars in the household but what the hell!!!!

No need for three cars but no good excuse (in my eyes) not to have either, saying that, our lass convinced me to go down to two vehicles for the summer.
At one point we had :
- 2009 VW Golf 2.0 TDI
- 2008 Toyota Yaris 1.4 D4D
- 2004 Mazda RX8 231 and
- 2008 Yamaha YBR125.
There are just the two of us though.
Thinking of doing a jacked up Toyota 4runner monster for the winter

Happy Mod'ing mate :D

Its come into its own now we have the M3 (had the Leon when I bought the Tolly) as I wouldn't like to leave it at the station each day so I have now found a very good reason for 3 cars - and to stay on this forum with an active project of course.

Fitted the TIP last weekend and replaced the broken and bodge repaired lower crank case breather. Both a complete PITA to do due to how tight it is between the turbo intake and the metal water pipe just in front of where the TIP routes, and for the b'stard clips that hold on the breather hose to the 3 other pipes. Eventually got it done though. Unfortunately, still getting a massive flatspot from time to time when cold, driven gently or in stop start traffic. Beginning to suspect coilpacks as I can't find any other leaks in the vac hoses or turbo system, or the breather. Ended up with red hoses due to not being patient enough to wait for them to make up blue ones (3 weeks ???) and they threw in some free vac hose as a freebie. The problem now is that all the FMIC kits I see have blue hoses and no option to swap for red or black. Aaaaarrghhhh!!!!! I'll probably buy a kit then some lengths of red hose to cut as required.

The car went through its MOT the other week with an advisory about their being a differential in the power of the braking on the front between left and right.

Today I decided to investigate and had the car up on the stands and the brakes off. I checked the following :-
  • difference in brake pad wear - nothing noticeable
  • visual check of all hoses - no leaks, bulges, kinks, corrosion or anything of note
  • caliper sliders - clean and free
  • seals - no leaks or cracks, no excessive muck
  • mountings - all secure

Also, on the road in all sorts of braking conditions there is no pull to the side at all. The car feels absolutely fine. I think I'll bleed them next week for the fun of it, but I'm going to leave it at that as I can't honestly find or feel anything wrong.

I think I've sorted the door seal leak too. Found the channels in the seals fixed to the underneath of the door were full of muck and the remains of a broken window so the water could not run along it, and the seal could not have folded into the correct postion on closing. Undid it all and cleaned it through and it seems to be holding. It seems too easy though so I guess we'll see over the next few days!

Anyways, whilst it was up on stands I decided to take the intercooler out and clean it all through. I was amazed at the amount of gunked up crud that was on the face of it. I jet washed it through (in the direction of the external air flow) and a lot of filth came out of it - the drive was black! Some minor oil residue inside, but only a thin coating and no pooling so I was happy with that. Checked all the seals and changed a couple of the clips that looked a bit past their best. Refitting was a pig with the airflow plastic ahead of the intercooler being a total pain to get lined up again. Ended up with the fog light out too just for access but got there in the end. I wish I had taken some pics but I was so filthy at this point from working in all that crud and the splash back from the jetwash I wasn't going in doors to search out the camera!

Then checked all the plugs and replaced one of my coil packs that looked a different shade of discolouration to the others inside (I have 3 spare coilpacks - I didn't buy one for such a whimsical idea!!) . Then took it for a road test. The car was running much better that it did before, on boost pulling cleaner and harder than before and no stuttering as it has done in the past.

I will get aorund to getting these cheap coilovers soon but an unexpected bill elsewhere kinda screwed that idea this side of pay day! In the next couple of weeks I'll have them on order though!

Just a small point with regards to your braking imbalance, when you're paying attention to the brakes, are you in the car on your own, or with others? because even the seemingly slight weight of a human behind the wheel has an affect on the handling of the car. For instance, my N/S front tyre wore out on my old corsa, because the tracking was off and my weight (all 10st. of it at the time!) gave the O/S wheel more traction and forced the N/S to slip.

Did you get any more info off the tester as to where the balance lies, which side is weaker? It might be that if you're in the car on your own, you don't feel the inbalance due to the weaker side being balanced by you..... If you know what I mean. Just a suggestion :)

Nice Toledo mate :D
Nobody suspects them to be as nippy as they are
I know what you mean about the sliding through corners, mine does it before deciding to stick its backside out, nearly caught me out he first time but now I'm used to it

It was tested at a mates garage so I'll have it on his rollers again to get that info. As for the being alone in the car, I was but I still think that it should show up on a road test if its on the limits of MOT pass or fail.

It's all about the coils!!! A new set of coilpacks on their way, in red, from Awesome. The misfire is back and with a vengence so having inspected the wiring and finding nothing I decided that a set of coilpacks was worth a go.

The JOM coilovers are ordered. I won't get a chance to fit them until the week after next, but I can start thinking about it now at least.

....and it all turned up today!!!! I'll take some pics at the weekend, but initial impressions on the coilovers are good. They look pretty good for the money and come with everything needed to go straight on other than the top mounts from the old suspension. I think I'll grease them all up once on and as part of fitting to make sure they remain adjustable and don't sieze up (I've read that they can corrode - but at this price point, what do you expect eh!!).

I'll aim to do some form of fitting guide as I've struggled to find one anywhere.

i have the same priced Jamex coils, and after a year of being on, there is no paint left on the springs and the "chroming" on the coils has started to rust.. but they are kept clean so should be ok...

their not as bad as people make out... and frankly... for that price i am quite impressed :)

I was on the verge of fitting the coilovers this morning, but I have a 2.5 hour time limit, its raining, and I've got to get hold of a spring compressor (anyone around Colchester/Clacton want to lend me one ?) .

I'll guess I'll be doing the fitting next week instead now.

Cheers!!

The coilovers will definitely be going on this weekend - I've got everything mapped out around it so unless there is heavy rain it will happen!!

Glad you are tracking the car Andy. Lots of attention to detail on your toy :)

Wish I'd got more track days in, but the money needs to go into the car at the moment doing some basic mods etc. Probably do a late booking in a few weeks if the weather holds out to being dry.
