So I bought a Cupra R and sold my Pd150! Who thinks this was a stupid idea?

Well my head thinks I'm an idiot because of my pocket and the PD150 did the miles and I was pleased with that.

Anyhow I've wanted the Cupra R for a while and I didn't want anything standard! Mileage I wasn't worried about as I've seen people say the engines are strong and are good for the miles as long as they have been looked after.. So I pledge into this cupra r with all the stage 2 upgrades. Professional remaps from AMD.
Artic FMIC!
New turbo!
Cambelt water pub changed about 15k ago.
Seat book stamps for service every 6months.
Clutch flywheel done 2015 I think.
MOT is clean! And 10months on it! So let's see what I'm taking about!

The car has 167k on the clock. I paid £1800 and fell in love.. Lots of stone chips and peel but it cleans up really nice still. And the coilovers give a soft ride yet it's lowered.

Looks tidy, I'm literally just breaking my PD150 to fund a Cupra R and like yourself am wondering whether I'm making the right decision with running costs?

Good choice and good price.
If it has new turbo etc it’s a winner.
Stuff the costs. You can’t drive one when you’re 80.
Enjoy life to the full. Other than buying housing, cars are our main big purchases, so you should have something you can afford, that makes you smile and be happy when iin it.

Thing is with the pd150 is its cheap to run! But is the Seat 1.9tdi the best deisel to run at cost? Are there better solutions? I've not entered that world so finding the right spec deisel would be a hard choice. The cupra r or the 180bhp 1.8t are ideal if you wish to adverture and want something quick. But for me for now.. The cupra r will do.. I may get sick of spending out for it so in a year too 6month should be enough time to evaluate my situation.

There are less than 2000 Mk1 (1M) LCR's on the roads these days (apparently) so yes look after it ........
And most of them are in the LE and NN postcode lol. But in all seriousness...there are alot of the R's about in them area's.

That's weird as i used to live in NN and did not see many (but spent very little time in Northampton itself) , however since i moved to LN I see loads of MK1 and 2

LE (Which is not far from NN) i am guessing has a lot of Seats, I did see a lot of them about when I used to go to Leicester.

I'm in LE and I see a few MK1's the odd MK2 and loads of MK3 FR's but no Cupra's

When I worked in NN I didn't see many SEAT's at all but that was just after the MK3 release.

Rarely see MK1 R's here in Somerset, but a healthy amount of loved Cupra's. Oddly at Castle Combe in the summer, there was only 1 MK3, not popular at all.

I think the MK3 is suffering from the PCP / Lease culture where people own them for 3 / 4 years then replace them.

Give it a couple years and I suspect you will see a few more MK3 around, I am certainly starting to see more Bling being offered so am guessing people are starting to work on the cars.

Quite agree with both points. The Lease deals obviously are good...just look at the number of people holding out for Cupra’s for nearly a year.

They are moddable as @theoldboy can testify. So in future years we are going to see list of 400+bhp Cupra MK3’s I would think.

It's performance vs running costs! I'm not entirely sure which is better! I don't mind putting in extra if it's a holiday drive I just couldnt justify the long drive to work.. But I only work 3miles from home and the Pd150 for working up about £20 per week.. So not really a money saver for me. But while I did explore the longer drives it was a pleasure to put in £20 fuel and do the miles. Guess il miss that for the time being. Who knows.. I might even go back eventually and look for a sporty quick Deisel that's if there are any to be considered.

I'm the same buddy and have been running diesels for about 10years now but like yourself my commute to the workshop every day is barely 4 miles each way.
I do take my girlfriend to work 3 times a week which is a 26 mile round trip but it's predominantly dual carriageway so you can cruise anyway.
My logic in changing from the FR TDI to the LCR is that I was about to upgrade the turbo for more power anyway plus I'd already accumulated the parts to do a LCR steering and suspension upgrade along with all the black plastics and headlining.
What with the impending cambelt, service & expired MOT it seemed more worthwhile to just buy a LCR and save myself a load of extra expense and ballache.

The only thing is it that I'm not currently struggling to find anything that hasn't done moon miles or is better than my FR TDI without needing a second mortgage!

Well if it's going to make you feel any better.. I saved for 3months and the sold my 150pd for £1150 with 102,000miles and drove 2 hours to deliver it to a 16 year old boy who's about to turn 17 so he can start driving
