I find my car less tail-happy on the way back from Makro with a few bags of cat litter in the boot ;)

:DWhy haven't the F1 teams thought of that:confused:

It's an interesting subject I'm reading a few track day car threads that have added aero and results seem encouraging. One chap fitted a flat floor and diffuser to his MX5 purely to improve his MPG on the motorway. I've won a diffuser on eBay and I'm going to make some custom canards. I'm looking to close off some of the holes in the front bumper. Like the redundant fog lamp grills which no longer have fog lights in or feed air to the SMIC's. I'm also going to block off the S badge grill and the slot below it.

I can't see it making a difference to cooling in the winter and I'll keep an eye on it in or red hot summers!
I've got an idea how to add a Gurney flap to the trailing edge of the rear spoiler. Although I think that it's still to low in the air flow to make much difference. The last thing I want to do is add a wing though! The flat floor and position of the diffuser are going to be the interesting parts. I've got a feeling it's going to develop into a track day car after all.

I know the VAG parts bin is vast but I didn't expect to fit a part from a Lamborghini!

The Lamborghini cap doesn't fit it's to small, school boy error! I'll have to go back to plan a and buy the over priced forge one. As you can tell I'm really not into bling but I'm getting carried away with the bay. I'm going to have to think about which coilovers to go for and get saving. I think I'm going to go for a full adjustable set and put the DP and map on hold until next year. I may even get rods fitted first.

Well as you know I've came up with the crackpot idea of fitting a bit of aero to my car. I'd been looking at some of the splitters you guys have been making for your cars and fancied having a go my self. I'd also read that Nick (Prawn) from ASN had been think of adding some aero and that got me thinking.
Looking under the car a flat floor seems relatively easy as its all a uniform level. The front of the car is pretty good any way it just needs a splitter extending to the under tray (which has NACA ducts for gearbox cooling so will have to stay) and the redundant fog lamp grills sealing up.

thats not my car unfortunately!

Oh and this arrived today.

It's a RT Motorsport diffuser. I was planning on making my own but as I keep finding out late night drinking and eBay don't mix! DON'T DO IT KIDS!!! I bough it from a chap who'd had it sat in his shed and not fitted it to his car. I've contacted RT and they say its a copy from a Celicia GT4 time attack car. When I can get my car up on a ramp I'll decide then if it's worth using, modifying or re selling.
My car is just for road use at the present time. I love the idea of tracking it I just need to grow a pair and get on with it! I also plan on keeping the car long term so whether it'll stay my daily or become a dedicated track car is undecided. As you can probably tell I'm not that decicive!
Thanks for looking, Paul.

Ok so eBay late at night you find something you like the look of and place a checky bid. You wake up the next morning have a busy day at work and forget that you've bid. So you buy a sim alar part you been think of buying for a while only to win the checky bid. Or is it just me???
It true coolant caps are like busses!

Sounds like you're going to make huge steps forward with the car in the months ahead; and in a very different way. Hopefully you'll get the chance to do the mods you've been thinking about. How are you getting on with the subframe/wishbones/bushes Paul?

Yeah know it a bit of a strange direction to go in but it an area I'm interested in. The raw materials aren't that expensive it's just going to take time to research and a bit of trial and error.
I've found a pair of poly bushed wishbones thanks to Tim up grading his. Plus a sub cram thanks to Barn. So things are looking up!

I've still got my old SCC front splitter :D

What's a SCC splitter? You do realis you gave me the idea to do this!!!

Seat Cupra Championship :)

The big splitter in that pic you posted up.

IIRC Audi fitted big plastic undertrays on a diesel A8, gave the flat floor to improve mpg ;)

*edit*

Also just found them on A4 as well - not sure how easily they could be adapted though

Thanks csd that's useful info. Aero is going to become a bigger part of car design now everyone is looking to reduce mpg.
I planning on using 2mm aluminium sheet to begin with and probably 5 mm marine ply. An SCC splitter would be useful. Where can you get them?

Yeah I had a quick nosy round the car park at lunch, a lot of new Audis seem to have lots of the grills in the nose blocked off.

I'd say have a word with D.K. above for a splitter lol :) Have heard of them appearing on eBay now and again....

Would be good to get a hold of a big sheet of the reinforced plastic VAG uses for undertrays etc, that stuff would be lighter than metal and definitely lighter than wood. Maybe worth having a trawl round your local scrappies for the biggest undertrays you can find?

When at inters last year i was speaking with the DAR guys with their time attack leon
They had recently done a complete flat floor, however the heat generated in with this setup was enough to melt a plastic control unit mounted on the transmission tunnel
They had to do some mods (cant remember exactly what) as the inside and tunnel, etc was untouchably hot
I real aero is only worth it if the suspension is also well set to utilise the addition forces applied on it

Good point. To relive the heat I'm either going to add bonnet vents (as under the car is where the heat from the bonnet usually exits) or/and leave a gap between the flat floor and underside of the car so it exits above the diffuser. Also if a bonnet vent is added directly after the radiator to relive the warm air that has passed through it. It also generates more front end down force. Exhaust wrap is another possibility.

The other thing I'm thinking of is adding a cold air feed from the scuttle as this is a high pressure area that is free from debris and close to the location of the standard air filter position.
The more I look into it the more involving it gets. Should be fun!

The DAR car also had a large bonnet vent and a quite powerful twin fan sat above the turbo.
Cant remember it to suck air out or blow it in though
The carbon fibre seatsport splitters look good but are lower and renowned for catching lots
