I've been searching posts for ages and have really only managed to figure screw milltek if I'm gonna spend that then get a custom system instead.

But my real question is:
For just sound go mufflerectomy, for big power go custom. But where is the cut off point? I have a PD130 so for instance is a custom system pretty much pointless if I'm going any less than a hybrid turbo sort of level?

Sorry if this comes across as a repeat post.

They do sound sweet. So your both running the original exhaust system just a decat and a smaller or no back box at all?

I'm not sure whether to go and have a S/S 2.5" bore decat with a small silencer or just save myself the money and have my standard setup decatted remove the mid silencer and then just have a smaller back box on the rear.

What do you think people?

Sportriders post is a bit miselading.

Ash's car is running a full 2.5" system with decat anhd small silencer.

Having had both mufflerectomy and now a full system on my car, I'd go for the full system. Well worth the extra money you pay, and sounds better too.

Where did you get your exhaust done and how much was it? Im looking to get one in the near future and i live in Hull.

Had it done at Custom Pipes in Doncaster.

Quality job and cost £300 for the full system. Very quiet on tickover and below 2k but once on boost it sounds great.

Is there anyway of changing the exhaust system on a TDI without resulting in huge clouds of black smoke constantly pouring out of the back end under heavy acceleration? Or is it just a case of regardless if it's a mufflerectomy or custom system that's just what happens with diesels?

Changing the exhaust makes no difference to the amount of smoke emitted. The best way to stop "huges clouds of black smoke" comming out of the back of the car is to get it mapped properly for the diesel/air supplied not to get a remap aiming at peak power more then what anyone else has for the same set up.

@ Sportrider . Sorry mate.

Just at the moment when I floor it there's not even a hint of smoke coming from my exhaust. But I see all these videos of diesels with a mufflerectomy / custom exhaust, and every car always has huge clouds of black smoke coming from the back!?!?!

So is it just coincidence that those videos I've seen are cars with poor remaps???

Its a good question and one that I wouldn't mind finding out myself.

Smoke isnt related to the exhaust system as such.

Smoke is down to the fueling of the car. It's basically unburnt fuel due to turbo lag.
With a de-cat, the turbo tends to be that bit more free to spool up quicker, meaning there should be less smoke if anything.

Most of the videos you will have seen, are of cars running hybrid turbo's, which tend to smoke a bit more anyway, due to increased lag and spool up time.

It's also often more noticeable after fitting an aftermarket/custom exhaust, as the tail pipe no longer faces the floor (providing it did in the first place), meaning the smoke isnt dispersed to the same extent, leaving it more visible.
