Mpg on Ibiza 1.4 75ps?

I know this has been covered before but with the search I couldn't get a definate answer....

I've been getting about 32-35mpg average on my 1.4 75ps petrol - is this normal? It seems a bit low to me as the Parkers average MPG figure is 42 for this model.

The petrol light comes on at about 270-290miles (250 if I'm really unlucky!)- I heard someone say that they'd done 350 miles on a tank but even when I've had long journeys at motorway speeds I've only managed 320.

I haven't got a trip computer so I've been working it out from miles travelled and litres put in - and yes that is miles per imperial gallon not US gallon.

I checked the tyres and getting them to the correct pressures helped things a bit (from the 250 mile petrol light up to 270 +ish!!)

My driving I admit is sometimes held up in traffic (about 30-50% of the time) and sometimes revving hard (have to with the 75ps!) but does include some cruising at about 60-80ish depending on traffic volume (and my mood) and I'm not constantly caning it.

Opinions?? And please no " I get 100mpg from my diesel cupra....!!!" as that won't help me decide if there's something not right with my car !! Thanks - opinions of people with similar cars are welcome!!!

I had a 1.4 106 Quiksilver when I passed my test and that used to get similar economy as you're getting in your 75ps, so I wouldn't worry too much. I've found that with the Derv I can get the Parkers quoted figure if I drive like a granny etc. Which is hard to do, isn't it! :p

It's winter, therefore you use the heaters more and rev it harder because it stays colder for longer, thus using more fuel.

Find out what your optimum speed to 'cruise' at is, then be gentle getting up to speed, it worked for me!

My diesel ibiza is pretty bad at economy at the moment, around 37mpg for just town work with the odd dual carriageway trip, i'm not impressed but I do open it up once its warm sometimes...

Mileage divide by litres filled up and times by 4.5=MPG

So my last tank... 296/34.75=8.517 x 4.5= 38.3 MPG

it'll be technique I'm sure... they brand it the sport, but you really need to wring it's neck to get shifting in it - which will just drink fuel

You may be right, but I don't wring it's neck that much, I'm fairly smooth really and most of my normal drive is either motorway, dual carriageways or slow trafficy two-way roads so not too much opportunity or need to really rev it - only sometimes at busy roundabouts or overtaking on normal roads (very, very rare in my normal driving areas!).

well I'm just about to fill up again so I'll post what I get.....
edit.. l got 34mpg :(

However the problem is probably the aircon.....
Now it's winter and I'm turning the ECON mode on a lot more it probably will make quite a lot of difference to the economy - does anyone know how much juice the aircon takes?? Say if you drive 100miles with the aircon on and off - is it quite a big difference?

I must admit I used the climate in non-ECON mode a lot up until a month or two ago and even now I still have the ECON mode off sometimes. Perhaps that's my problem... aircon junkie...:cartman:

I noticed in my old fiesta that when the aircon was on it really sapped the power and the revs dropped so I had to squeeze the accelerator more - I've not noticed quite the rev-drop thing in the Ibiza- but I'm sure the compressor still saps the little power the Ibiza's got anyway... so I'll just have to remember to switch that ECON mode on... (seems strange to me to switch something ON to turn air con OFF!)

got an 06 1.4 sport and iv had 350miles out of a tank

not filled it fully for a while, i put £17.50p in (dont ask why that figure lol) and it puts it to half a tank maybe a little over and thats 6miles to work, 6miles back home 5days a week + every other saturday. and the odd bit of running around after work on on weekends. sometimes get week and half out of it sometimes more depending how i drive.
busy traffic on way to work.

try one of the engine treatment octane bootsters, add it to a full tank or whatever the instructions say.will clean all the rubbish out of your engine and use better fuel not supermarket stuff.

i dont mind paying the extra few pence to buy BP. if i have to ill stick a small amount of jet or something else in but never fill up at supermarkets with there cheap low octane fuel.
dads got company car and company petrol card and goes to BP and says to me if i was just like you id looked for a cheaper station but i just say im sticking with BP because its better

I usually fill up at Shell because it is on my way to work, however sometimes go to Tescos if I'm desperate. I do notice that I get a few more miles from Shell Fuel..

Perhaps next time I'll fill up with v-power or equivalent to try to clean the engine out. I'm a little dubious though as I once paid the 5p a litre extra for "optimax" in my zetec fiesta and never noticed a difference- perhaps it makes more difference in a performance engine or maybe you have to use it regularly?

Richie - my ibiza doesn't smoke (that I'm aware of). !!:smoke:

I guess 34mpg isn't BAD (it's better than my fiesta which only managed 30-32mpg) I just would have expected a bit more... -perhaps 36-38mpg

yeh i think you have to use it regulary to notice much but you still notice a bit when you 1st start using it.

i remember the 1.2 fabia i had when my car was in for repair.
stick 10quid in and it would run for ever lol

1.8t is good for mid 30's to the gallon, high 40's is possable if you use the cruise and do 55mph for ages on the motorway no problem

Ok I do beleive you. M0rk is probably right - with a more powerful engine you're probably not going to be revving it as much as I am in my car - although I don't really wring it's neck that much. Mind you I guess my only comfort is that you probably pay more for insurance!!

This morning I drove like a granny and stuck to 60-70mph or less and tried to change up at 2000 revs-ish. I'm also going to be keeping the ECON mode on and try to drive like there's a raw egg under the accelerator (which is how I heard someone describe it) for the next tank of fuel to see how I do!

I reckon with a trip computer / cruise control it's easier to drive sensibly for good mpg as you've got the evidence right in front of you all the time. My partner plays a little game in his diesel civic to see just how good he can get the average/instant econ figure he says he often sits behind all the lorrys on the motorway doing 60mph because the econ reading is something like 70+ mpg! Mind you sometimes he does use the power of the 2.2 diesel and really pushes it!!
