Maybe they do, but that wouldnt account for the claimed increases in MPG from a remap.
I would be suprised if they run open loop very much of the time as it kind of defeats the point of having all the sensors and is a sure fire way to have the engine running a lot less smoothly than it could.
Maybe I am wrong, I dont know specifically how the VAG system works, I am talking from my own experiences of mapping EFI cars.
