MP3 CDs

The manual for the in-car radio/cd player states that MP3 CDs can be played. Can someone please explain what an MP3 CD is and how it differs from a normal CD? Does it hold more music than a regular CD+/-R?

Please be warned that if the answer reveals something that I may find useful I will be asking how to go about getting these

In a nutshell you can fit about 8 albums on an MP3 cd so no need to have a cd auto changer. It is simple switch between albums or tracks with the buttons on the steering wheel. Track and album info is also displayed on the radio screen.

I think the MP3 compatable ones have "MP3" printed above the CD slot.

also some brands of CDRs sometime dont work on certain players.

just incase someone has trouble with a CDR in their mp3 compatable player.

Whilst we're talking about the MP3 player, is it possible to keep the track name (etc) displayed all the time, rather than pressing the info button? My old third-party MP3 in my old Mk1 Leon did keep it on screen which i found usefull..

er, www.nero.com? I currently use the full version of nero which works a treat (80min CDR's & CDRW's), but can't you use Windows Explorer in XP or Vista to burn MP3's to a disk? I'm sure i've done it that way in the past.

Nero is a pay product from ahead software. If you only want to make simple MP3 compilation cds, just download and use a free alternative like CDBurnerXP...

You can even do it with windows media player, though i've never done it I don't think, at least just dragging folders over.

In fact, I think even Windows Explorer lets you burn folders to a CD, which can be read by the Leon's head unit fine.

That's how I do it. Load up a CD & the Auto play dialog box gives you the option to rip to MP3.

1. wrong size/shape,
2. its CAN-BUS only (mk1 leon doesnt have this.)

Once again - thanks all for the input.

I followed the link provided by S8N (cheers matey) and have now burned my very first MP3 CD. I tried it in the car and it played perfectly.

At first I thought that if I had known how to do this from the beginning I would not have had the dealer fit a CD stacker and saved myself £300, but now I think that I prefer having the steering wheel mounted controls that you have with a normal CD.

For anyone who hasn't played MP3 CDs, you have to push buttons on the player to change folders or tracks within folders on the disk.

Anyway, its great having 10 CDs on one disk and will add even more variety to the quantity of music that I can have whilst out and about. Who knows, one day I may even have something playing that 'er indoors actually likes.

the buttons should work normally on the steering wheel for selecting folders (albums) and tracks. Have another go front seat driver it may be the way you burned the cd.Let us know how you go on
