After being cleaned by the dealer twice, my bonnet lining is yet again covered in white mould

SEAT UK have just told me this is not a known problem.
The dealer has just told me they have seen several like this and have ordered a new bonnet lining.

Anyone else got this? Must be one of two possible problems....
Water is leaking into the bonnet somehow - or
The material is not damp proof / waterproof enough.

Just have visions of the new lining getting fitted and it coming back again as the source of the problem needs to be tackled in order to cure it :(

Yep mine developed some white mould very early on... never thought of having it replaced though - let us know how you get on!

Got the new lining fitted this morning. Not at all convinced that it will make any difference as the source of the problem is not identified, therefore its probably going to come back again over time. :(

Dealer says they have seen several like this; so keep an eye on your Alteas and maybe if it happens to enough of them, SEAT UK will be forced into doing something about it.

Hi Dude,
guess those national SEAT services don't talk cross-border?

There were several complaints about moulding bonnet insulation reported to the German SEAT dealers in December '05 ... and same here, noone ever heard of anything like that before :redface: :shrug:

If you want to see some pictures of "german mould" ;) ... here you go ...
=> http://www.seat-forum.de/forum/showthread.php?t=13749&page=3&pp=15 (posts #31,36,37)

Sorry, there seems to be no concrete hint where the mould (or what at least is a perfect lookalike) is coming from ... our members discussed "spray water from headlight-/windshield washer" as well as "thawing salt" and many many others ... no idea, what might be the reason ... but the dealers seem to be willing to replace those mats.

@BleuLluvia
Bet, this "moisissure" is a topic in the french ALTEA-forum as well?

Greets ... Klaus

Hi Klawit

Thats interesting! Obviously a more common problem than I thought. It's definitely not "spray water from headlight-/windshield washer". The reason I'm so sure is that my car sat unused for a week recently and before I went anywhere I opened the bonnet and the lining was totally soaked. I have no idea how or why it was so wet but it hadnt even moved for a week so that rules out the windscreen washers. Even the cloth cover around the battery was soaked.

Come on SEAT - this is not good enough - some answers please !!! [:@]

I also have the mould appearing and as far as I can tell the water which appears to cause the mould penetrates between the plastic bit adjacent to the windscreen and the metal part of the bonnet

I've noticed this on my Leon. It doesn't have the lining like you have on your Altea, but I've often seen water sitting aroung my oil filler cap and you can see that it has came from the bit where the plastic meets metal on the bonnet.

Jonial - yet another one to add to the list. You should get a new one fitted under warranty. The only way I see SEAT fixing this is if enough people get them replaced hitting SEAT in the pocket and forcing them to admit there is a known problem.

LeakyTurnip, I was actually thinking of placing a post in the Leon forum as the cars are so similar. When you say there is no lining on the Leon, do you mean there is just bare metal under the bonnet? When they were replacing my lining I had a look at an Altea in the showroom and there was no lining under the bonnet either. So either they dont put them on Alteas anymore because of this problem or they had knicked the one off that car to put on mine.... :think:

Actually, it was a 1.6 petrol Altea that I saw in the showroom. Need to find a new diesel one to see if the lining is still there.

Seems like the new lining is made from a different material than the origional one and doesnt appear to get wet or damp at all.

I recommend all owners with the older one get it replaced under warranty to stop a possible mould outbreak.

Its early days but hopefully the problem is solved.
